Il était l' ennemi juré de Mardouk à qui lui fend le crane et le dépeça après avoir vaincu son nouvel époux, le monstre Kingu, qu'elle a elle-même engendré. qui créa le ciel avec son corps une fois celui-ci vaincu. Divinité primordiale, Tiamat incarne "la mer salée", compagne d'Apsu, "les eaux douces". De leur union sortirent les premières générations de grands dieux puis accède au désir d'Apsu qui, agacé par le bruit des jeunes générations, souhaite les détruire. Celui-ci ayant été tué par Enki (lequel avait été prévenu du danger), Tiamat s'oppose alors à Mardouk
