James was one of the icorporators & trustees of Hampden-Sidney College, May 1783, in Prince Edward Co., VA. As trustee he was empowered to elect the professors of the College "who would preserve in the minds of the students that sacred love & attachment which they should bear to the principles to the present glorious Revolutions" & was instructed that no one should be elected unless the tenor of his conduct should manifest to the world his sincere affections fo the liberty and independence of the US of A.
