William Bright Allen served in Company D 6th Illinois Cavalry, his enlistment papers dated October 11,1861 say he was 5ft. 9 in.,fair complexion,blue eyes, fair hair,he furnished his own horse and equipment. Recruited by Hosea Vice and mustered in as a Quartermaster Sargent in Shawneetown,IL on January 9,1862. On June 30,1862 he was absent sick. From July 1,1862 until December 31,1862 present.From January to July 1863 absent sick While serving near LaGrange, Tennessee, March 1863 he contracted chronic diarrhea and chronic bronchitis. He was given a disability discharge July 18, 1863 in LaGrange Tennessee.

The certificate of Disability for Discharge stated that he was a Sargent in Joseph Coker's Co.D. He was born in Johnson County North Carolina 37 yrs,old 5'9'' fair complextion and hair, and blue eyes, ''This soldier has been unfit for duty since February 1862 having the fever at that time and since that time he has been afflicted with the chronic diarrhea and pain in the breast rendering him totally incapacitated for th Service with no prospect of his recovery, I therefore recommend that he be discharged" Signed June 25th,1863 by Thomas Baker,1st Lieut,Co.A 1st ILL,Cavalry, Commanding Detachment.

"I certify that I have examined the said Wm.B.Allen Sgt..... and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of consumption consecutive to typhoid fever which in my opinion established ulcerations in the abdominal organs he has been under medical treatment ever since February 1862 Disease contracted in the service" Signed Ino N.Noglas, Surgeon, 6th Ill.Cavalry.
