"HENRY AND ALICE (BURMA) VAN GERPEN
Henry Van Gerpen was born in Pewsum, Germany on February 12, 1904 to Peter and Janna Van Gerpen. His father was a baker. In accordance with the German custom of that day, Henry became a carpenter's apprentice at the age of 14. Afterserving three years of a four-year apprenticeship, he decided to come to the United States, to a relative who lived near Buffalo Center. Henry worked on the Jasper Dirkson and Fred Schaper farms just south of Rake, Iowa befoe going toCalifornia, where he was employed at a large dairy farm. Several months later he returned to Iowa, and he and Alice Burma were married on November 20, 1928.
Alice was born on January 27, 1912 on a farm southeast of Rake, the present home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Liverca. Her parents were Jasper and Jennie (Heerkes) Burma, who had moved there from Dumont, Iowa in the early 1900's. The otherBurma children were Katie, Ole, Ben and Jasper. When Alice was one year old her father was forced to retire from farming because of poor health. The family moved to Buffalo Center where Mrs. Burma did house cleaning and took in washingsto support her family. Jasper died in 1928, the year Alice and Henry were married. ... Jennie Burma married Henry Dohlman, a former Rake area farmer, in 1932. He died in 1968 at the age of 98. Jennie's five children are all still lliving. Alice, ... and Ole lives in Thornton, Iowa. ..."

The community mourns the death of Jasper Burma, resident of Buffalo Center and vacinity for many years. It was Mr. Burma's misfortune to become ill with a physical ailment about twenty-three years ago that followed him !lm through theyears and gradually grew worse which was the cause of his passing peacefully away at his house in west part of town Sunday ___ing July 29 at 2. o'clock. Mr. Burma had not been nble to leave hls chair for the past fifteen years andgenerally grew weaker. During the years of his suffering which he bore very patiently, he received the best of care from his devoted wife and famiy. He was loved; his frailties were overlooked, and he will be long remembered as a kindhusband, and father and a true friend who would have caused the roses to smile more ___ly had he had the physical con___tion. While he will be missed in the home, Mr. Burma, contented and prepared, bid adieu to this vale of tears.

On Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock the funeral services were held at the Reformed church in charge of Rev. J. H. Schoon, who was ably assisted by his son, Prof. H. E. Schoon, and the remains were tenderly laid to rest in Gracelandcemetery; mourned by those who knew him best and with many floral evidences expressive of the tenderness that others held for him."
