"Raymond Gustav Aukes
Raymond Gustave Aukes, age 89, passed away Tuesday, December 3 2013 at Kossuth Regional Health Center.
Ray was born May 29, 1924 near Buffalo Center, to Reinder (RE) and Anna (Onken) Aukes. He was a lifee-long member of the First Congregatinal Church in Buffalo Center and served on the board of deacons.
Ray went to country school until eighth grade and then attended high school at Buffalo Center. On January 22, 1946 he married Betty Hauskins at The Little Brown Church in Nashua.
Ray and Betty farmed near Thompson until 1960. The then moved to the present farm place southwest of Buffalo Center. Ray primarily raised beef cattle, hogs, corn and soybeans. While farming, he was an active member of the IowaCattlemen's Association for several years. He was a true farmer at heart; keeping a log of dates and yields, reading all of the farming magazines, and checking on the crops by driving around the countryside or flying around in theTri-Pacer. He was also a seed corn dealer for many years and enjoyed the time spent with his customers. Serving his community, Ray served on the Board of directors for the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center. Ray farmed untioretirement in 1989.
After retirement, Ray and Betty traveled in their travel trailer around Minnesota and Iowa, looking for good fishing lakes. In the winter, they traveled to Florida, Texas or Arizona, making new friends wherever they went. In most recentyears, Ray continued working the land, growintg vegetables and tending to the apple trees, and then canning vegetables, peaches and applesauce. As long as he had something to do on the farm and he had his pickup truck to drive around, hewas satisfied. He said he 'didn't need all that other sturr', and that's how he lived his life.
Ray is survived by his children: Gary (Orva) Aukes of Payson, AZ; Doug (Deb) Aukes of Buffalo Center; luAnn (Keven) Johnson of Coon Rapids, MN; and Ron (special friend Kim) Aukes of Buffalo Center.
