REMARKS: Rebecca Belle Elliott, "Belle", was born on January 17, 1904, on
her father's farm in Cleveland County, North Carolina, the daughter of
Thomas
Forbis Elliott, "Tommy", and Rebecca Belle Hoyle Elliott, "Belle". She
was the
youngest of their eleven children, who were born in the following order:
Susan
Ola, "Susan"; Sarah Therissa, "Sally"; Mary Forbis, "Mary"; Margaret
Gordon,
"Mag"; Julia Ann, "Julia"; Alice Hoyle, "Alice"; John Paxton, "John";
William
Christopher, "William"; Florence Belle, "Florence"; Virginia Wells,
"Ginny";
and Rebecca Belle, "Belle". Sally died when she was fourteen. The others
lived to middle or old age. Belle's mother died after giving birth to
her.
Several years later her father married Caroline Withrow. Belle has a
half-brother, Valentine Jason Elliott, "Val", from her father's second
marriage.
Belle was raised by her sister Susan, who married Rufus Weathers and had
five
children: Ola, Pantha, Marci, Rufus, and Tommy. Susan's family became
Belle's
family. Belle was also very close to her brother John and his family.
On October 1, 1932, Belle married Daniel Maxwell (Max) Coble, son of
Daniel
Coble and a Miss Kirkman. They were both school teachers. They lived on
Max's
farm near High Point, North Carolina, and Belle continued to teach school.
They had no children. However, four of her nieces (Ola and Marci
Weathers and
Margaret and Mary Belle Elliott) lived in Greensboro, and they were very
close.
According to her obituary in the 1/6/97 "Greensboro News and Record,"
Belle
graduated from Duke University and received a Master's Degree in Education
from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She taught school in
Cleveland County, Guilford County, and the Greensboro School System.
Belle said that she taught at Lattimore for several years before her
marriage
and move to Guildford County. She was teaching at Lattimore when she
went to
Greensboro to visit her sister Ginny during her Easter vacation. Ginny
was
also a single school teacher. Her principal told Max that he should do
his
duty and entice Belle to move to Greensboro. He asked her for a date, but
they courted for six years before they married and she moved to
Greensboro.
Max died February 24, 1988, and was buried in the cemetery at Alamance
Presbyterian Church southeast of Greensboro. After his death, Belle sold
the
farm and moved to the Presbyterian Home in High Point, where she lived
until
her death January 4, 1997. She was cremated and her remains were buried
in the
plot next to her husband's on January 7, 1997. Graveside services were
held at 10:30 a.m., and a memorial service was held in the chapel at the
Presbyterian Home at 2:30 p.m.
Belle died from colon cancer. Although she was 92 years old, she was
active
until a few weeks before her death, and she was mentally alert until the
end.
She was a remarkable woman, and her passing left a void in the lifes of
her many
friends and relatives.
