[patti-lawson--bessiemay.FTW]From a document called "Out of These Hills", a program for the Olive Hill Centennial in 1961. The author of the article partially quoted below was not identified."Robert Henderson, who originally came from Scotland to the UnitedStates********, fought in the Revolutionary War, and was with GeorgeWashington at Valley Forge. He married a Jackson, who was a cousin of Stonewall Jackson. They had two sons, Robert II, Jim, and one daughter,Pollyana (Jane)."After the Revolutionary War he moved to Old Virginia in Wise County. He left Wise County, a. (no date provided), and came to what is now Kentucky. Robert obtained a land grant from Virginia and brought his two sons, R obert II and Jim. They built the first house here. Robert, Sr., went back to Virginia and brought his wife and daughter back with him******. His wife died along the way and was buried near the mouth of the Kanawha River."The daughter, Pollyana, was kidnaped by the Cherokee Indians. Robert II and Jim trailed them to the mouth of Laurel and there killed the Indians and rescued Pollyana. An Indian girl was with them and they brought herback with them and reared her. Robert II married the Cherokee Indian girl and they had four sons, Robert III, Harve, George, and Green, who was nicknamed Doc. "Pollyana married Jackie McGlone." ; END OF ARTICLE QUOTE.*******There seem to be some possible inaccuracies in this article. It is more likely that the father or grandfather of Robert was the first to arrive here from Scotland and Robert was born here. Robert had at least five known children, not just three. The family is known to have been inthe area that one time was part of Augusta County, Virginia. It is nowpart of Pennsylvania Old church records of Augusta County, Virginia, Tinkling Spring and Old Stone House churches show eight Henderson families in the mid 1700's. among the baptisms are Robert born Oct 28,1744 to Daniel Henderson and Robert born June 5, 1748 to John Henderson. Also in question is the death of the Mother prior to her arrival in Kentucky. The births of the two youngest children are stated elsewhere as occuring in Kentucky. The daughter Esther, born 1793 is stated as born in Kentucky on the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census records. Robert purchased 7,118 acres of land in 1794 and built the first home at what is now Olive Hill, Carter County, Kentucky at the site known as Camp 60. He is not on the 1800 Kentucky census but appears to again be in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania By 1810 he shows up back in Kentucky where he builds a new home on the present Democrat Hill in Olive Hill. It is possible that his wife died on the return trip to Kentucky.
This is a work in progress, not all family connections have been verified. I am grateful to the contributions made by others to the advancement of this project.
