This seems the most probable link to our ancestors in America. There isa lot of evidence to support this assertion. From the Miller Book we see the solid information that the William Henderson(wife Margaret Bruce) was the father of James, our first ancestor in America, and the son of Gentleman John Henderson. Miller gives good reasons for William being from Fordell and that his father was born around 1650 to the son of one of the sons of Sir John Henderson and Margaret Menteith.
I have found the Christening of William at Dunfermline on April 27, 1676, the illegitimate son of John Henderson and Magdaline Lundie. I also have found in the Scottish records a John Henderson born 1655 with father William. ; I think this may be the William, second son to John Henderson and Margaret Menteith, but have no definitive proof. It does fit, however, very well.
With this info, I and others think Sir John's son William to be the most likely father for John 1655, father to William 1676. If not it seems almost certain that there is a tie somewhere to the Fordell Hendersons. See my article in Fall 2001 edition of An Canach for details (is included in my Henderson Book).
William, with his brother James "had to make submission before the congregation of Dalgety on April 30, 1649 for their part of the 'Engagement' with Charles I." See Neville page 182.
On April 2, 1670 " Disposition by William Henderson, brother of Sir John Henderson,Bt., in favour of Sir John of tenement on south side of High Street of In verkeithing.: Fordell Papers 172/116.
William and his brother John were on June 25, 1674 summoned to compear before the Privy Council on charges that both " are knowne to be inciters of the people of Dunfermline to feild convectibles." This occurred because they had parted company with his Royal Master on religion, becoming Covenanters(see Stephens p.146).
Putting these together, we have William born 1627 in the area of Dunfermline/Dalgety Parish; getting in trouble there in 1649(22 years old); marrying in 1654 on the other side of Fife(Ferry Port on Craig Parish); having his kids there in 1655 and 1657; returning to Dunfermline sometime before 1674 when he was again in trouble; death about 1676 in Dunfermline, the same location and year his grandson was born.
We can also rule out most of the other possibilites. ; The connection could not have been to any of the other boys of John Henderson and Margaret Menteith. We have good records on John and James, and George and Francis died without children.
Some have believed that our William that married Margaret Bruce was 1) the 4th son of Sir John and Margaret Hamilton or 2) the 4th son's, 3rd son William. He was neither. The 4th son William was the next heir, with different dates and spouse. Besides his mother died in 1671 and our William was not born until 1676. As to the second possibility, that Willam did marry a Margaret Bruce, but had no children and birth date was way after 1676.
Finally, another possibility was that William that married Margaret Bruce could have been the son of John, the first son of John and Margaret Hamiliton. He died at 18 without marrying.
This is a work in progress, not all family connections have been verified. I am grateful to the contributions made by others to the advancement of this project.
