Though the Kanawha River now is in West Virginia, at the time of Mary "Polly" Jackson's birth, the area was simultaneously claimed by both Virginia and by Pennsylvania. Later on, the Mason-Dixon line was used to separate the two British colonies. However in 1752, there was no clear boundary between the two.
Augusta County was a huge area at this time, for it included not only what is now West Virginia, but also what is now Kentucky as well as portions of Virginia. Over time, new counties were created and Augusta County, VA shrank in size.
