Biography
John Trundy
b. abt. 1698, s/o George and Elizabeth (Trefethen) Trundy
Place of Birth: One source [not verified] gives birth as Holland. Thatcher, Alice Trundy, Ancestors and Descendants of Alfred Eames Trundy And of his Wife, Elizabeth Mehitable Bean (Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, 1995).]
Second source: History of Deer Isle Maine also reflects "...a native of Holland, and died when a young man,..."
Noted: Place Of Birth (Lacking a Record of birth, father, George Trundee is reported at " New Castle by 1696. " Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, Vol. 5)
d. Oct. 1755 aged 57, Falmouth, ME
m. (1) abt.1725 Deer Isle, ME Jane (__xxx__) Coats, widow of Robert Coats [ xxx May be TREFETHEN, Jane b. ABT 1708 Newcastle, Rockingham, NH. Parents: Father: TREFETHEN, Foster Mother: PAINE, Martha] Noted: place of marriage in error/Deer Isle not settled until 1760's.
[Note: Of interest toward Jane's birth name being Trefethen: Three Trundy children, namely Elizabeth, Sarah, and John Trundy, are identified in their grandfather's (Foster Trefethan's) Will dated March 30, 1751. They were to receive their inheritance of five Shillings "when they arrive at the ages of twenty and one" (Libby, p. 690). Foster and Martha (Paine) Trefethen's daughter, the grandchildren's mother, is unidentified in Foster's Will, which suggests that their daughter was not alive at the time Foster's Will was executed. In "Helene Genes_ Notes" (source/link below), John and Jane had three children of those names, i.e. Elizabeth, Sarah, and John, who may not have reached 21 years of age in March 1751, and if Jane Trefethen were their mother, they would be Foster's grandchildren. Other daughters of Foster Trefethen married, but none married a spouse with surname Trundy, which was the grandchildren's surname as was provided in Foster's Will. Jane and John would have been 1st cousins, Jane's father (Foster) and John's mother (Elizabeth) being brother and sister. Per "Helene Genes_Notes," John and Jane had 13 children, the last being Thomas born about 1742/43 in Falmouth. By 1743, John is documented to be in Falmouth with 2nd wife, Catherine, which provides evidence that Jane had passed away in 1742/43 (maybe from possible complications with Thomas's childbirth--her last and 13th child). As a result of a reconfigured household, some of John and Jane's children may have been parsed out to other family members with the death of their mother--Elizabeth, Sarah, and John being three all under age 11 in 1743, who may have joined the household of their grandfather Foster in New Castle, New Hampshire, thereby could have come into their grandfather's Will, while other Trundy (and some other) grandchildren did not.]
m. (2) Catherine _______ [see source_ Notes...] According to theGenealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire(Libby, p. 695), John was with wife Catherine in 1743, quoting "John, Falmouth, formerly of Newc. [New Castle, New Hampshire], with w. Catherine."
NOTES: I got the name of Samuel's father and the line back from the Robert Wylie Family History Website at Rootsweb.com. John's name appears on the tax rolls of Newcasle, NH from 1720 through 1743. He was a brick mason, timber dealer, and an inn holder by 1729. In 1726 John and Jane bought and sold property in Newcastle. In 1743 John sold his Newcastle property to Thomas Bell and moved his family to Falmouth, ME where he and second wife bought property in Cape Elizabeth.
John Trundy was documented to be on the tax rolls in New Castle, New Hampshire from 1720 through 1743. He was a mason (brick layer), timber dealer, and an inn holder by 1729. In 1726 he was documented to be with wife Jane buying and selling property. John was also one of three witnesses to the Will of John Wilson dated February 24, 1738 and which was proved on March 28, 1739 in New-Castle.
There are two conflicting stories as to when John removed to Falmouth: 1) In or before 1741, or 2) in 1743.
Regarding the 1st scenario: Because John and Jane's youngest sons Samuel (b. about 1741) and Thomas (b. about 1742) were reportedly born in Falmouth, that part now known as Cape Elizabeth, John and Jane may have removed to Falmouth from New Castle sometime between March 1739 and 1741. Jane then would have passed away in Falmouth about 1742 (perhaps from possible complications of Thomas's childbirth).
Regarding the 2nd scenario and probably the more likely: In 1743, John is on record for selling his New Castle property and buying land in Falmouth that same year with 2nd wife, Catherine. This scenario points to the possibility that Jane passed away in New Castle where John was left a widower and where all 13 of his and Jane's children were born.
John continued to reside in Falmouth as he and his household are documented in Falmouth (now Cape Elizabeth), Massachusetts Bay (now State of Maine) in 1754 per the Early Census Index, p. 311 (See Batchellor below). John died in Falmouth one year later in October 1755.
In the 1800 Federal Census record for Deer Isle, Hancock, Province of Maine, John's son Samuel reported that he (Samuel) had emigrated to Deer Isle from "Portland," a portion of which was also known as Falmouth. Per Hosmer (p. 93) and Deer Isle town records, this would have been in 1765. Because the first non-Indian resident of Deer Isle is documented to be Eaton in 1762, it is highly unlikely that John married wife "Jane" in Deer Isle in 1725, as the area was largely occupied by Indians at that time. Because John Trundy is documented as living in New-Castle, New Hampshire in 1738, being there with wife Jane, then removing to Falmouth between 1741 & 1743, there is a high likelihood that John married "Jane" in New-Castle, not Deer Isle. The Early Census (source below) documented John's continued residence in Falmouth to 1754 where he would pass away the following year in Oct. 1755.
Additional Research Notes
John's father George was on record as a "caulker," caulking ships in 1696 in New Castle, Rockingham, New Hampshire, and appeared in 1698 on tax rolls in New-Castle. Another source provides that George, John's father, became a freeman on March 6, 1692/93. Hence, if John was born about 1698 and in this year his father was already a documented resident of New-Castle, New Hampshire, then John was likely born in New-Castle, New Hampshire, not Holland. In addition, John's mother, Elizabeth Trefethen, was reportedly born in New-Castle, her father being a ship builder in Portsmouth. Therefore, George, may have been the emigrant from Holland, not his son John as other secondary sources have claimed.Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, Vol. 5Further research is in progress.
