Biography
1757 Indian War Service: Capt. Dominicus Jordan's Spurwink Company. [Falmouth, Maine] April 29, 1757, Falmouth. A True copy of the Training Soldiers under the command of Capt. Dominicus Jordan, and old men from sixty years to sixteen years old. Henry Jackson, Clerk of said Company.
Deer Isles and Settlers. [page] 15 _1765. Samuel Trundy from Cape Elizabeth was the first settler on the west side of the island, head of S. W. Harbor. In the 1800 Federal Census for Deer Isle, Samuel Trundy is noted to have emigrated from "Portland." In 1765, when Samuel first appears in Deer Isle (Hosmer, p. 93), Portland, then known as New Casco, and renamed Falmouth in 1765, included a large area of land at the time. On November 1, 1765, in same year when New Casco was renamed Falmouth, Cape Elizabeth separated from then Falmouth and became the 23rd town in Province of Maine.
Samuel was born about 1741. He was only about 1 year old when his mother died and 14 years old when his father John died. He was 16 (minimum age to enlist) when he served Capt. Dominicus Jordan in the Indian Wars. Samuel was in his early 20's when he removed from the Portland area to Deer Isle. Though his brother George and his marriage is listed in Falmouth's records, Samuel's marriage is not. [Samuel Trundy's brother, George Trundy m. Nov. 30, 1757 at Falmouth, ME; Olive Jordan.]
Samuel passed away in Deer Isle on March 4, 1804.
TOWN OF DEER ISLE, MAINE. 97 [page 97]
Samuel Trundy was the occupant of the lot of land lying on the south side of Emerson's Mill Pond and at the head of the Southwest Harbor. He was a native of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and came here in 1765â the first person who made a settlement upon the west side of the island and southwesterly of the Northwest Harbor, except Mr. John Pressey and his son John Pressey, Jr. A former neighbor of his, Mr. Thomas Small, came east intending to settle in the present town of Bluehill, and on his way anchored in the Northwest Harbor, came over to see him, and was by him persuaded to remain; this was in 1767, and at that time Mr. Pressey had made his settlement. Mr. Trundy's mother came with him and was his housekeeper for a few years, when her other son, Mr. George Trundy, came and removed her to his home. Their father was a native of Holland and died when a young man, leaving two sons.
The wife of Mr. Samuel Trundy was Miss Ann Carey, and they were the parents of fourteen children and grandparents of one hundred and twenty. Eleven of their children had families. Five of them had twelve children each; two had eleven each; three, ten each; and one, eight.
Mr. Trundy died in 1805. His widow became the wife of Mr. James Jordan, who died in 1818; she afterward married Mr. Jeremiah Stover, who outlived her, she dying in 1826.The children of Mr. Trundy were: Daniel, who died in 1835, in Dover, Maine; Samuel, who died in Newburyport;Thomas, who died in 1846; and John, in 1859, Rockland. The daughters were the wives of Messrs. Peletiah Barter, Abner Lane, David Thurlow,Daniel Crockett, Jonathan Pressey, John Whitmore, and Hon. Richard Warren, â all of whom are now dead.
