History and Genealogy of Thomas Powell & Henrietta Howells, W.D. Shirk, 1918:
Francis J., son of Francis W. and Margaret (Leach) Powell was born 17 Oct 1859, at the old homestead of his grand-father, Thomas J. Powell; three miles east of Fresno, O. He attended the home school and resided on the farm with his parents until twenty years of age. In furthering his education he attended Scio (O.) college for one year and then spent two years at Ohio Wesleyan university at Delaware, OH.
The mercantile business always appealed strongly to Frank. He has spent
about twenty years of his life at this occupation, starting as a clerk at F.A.
Richmond, at Orange, OH. He was later in business in Winfield, Kansas, and
Seymore. Iowa. In 1890 he returned to Ohio and located in West Lafayette.
Here he entered business as a retail merchant and continued to work unt. 1904.
On 6 Jan 1892, he was united in marriage to Harriette Russell, dau. of W.A. and Elizabeth Russell, of West Lafayette, OH. She was born 1 Feb 1869, near Kidder, MO. At the age of four years she returned with her parents to Ohio and located at West Lafayette. She has always been a very energetic worker in the Methodist Episcopal church, her particular interest being in foreign missionary work. At present she holds the office of Mite Box secretary of the Cincinnati branch of the Woman's Foreign Missionary society.
Two sons were born to the above subjects: Russell Howells, 9 Nov 1892, and Eugene Francis, 7 May 1895. Both are graduates of the West Lafayette High school. Russell graduated from the College of Pharmacy of the Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, in 1916. Eugene will receive the bachelor of science degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1918. Both boys now are soldiers with their names on the roll of honor.
