Known by his second given name, Jan [Joannes/John], he was only 2 years old when the Gubbels family left the Netherlands for America--sailing on the Plymouth Rock from London, England to New York, New York, where they arrived on May 15, 1862. The Gubbels family first settled in Jamestown Township, Grant County, Wisconsin, where in 1870, the U.S. Census lists John, as age 11, in his father's household.
In 1874, the Gubbels family moved to Shelby County, Iowa, where they farmed in Cass and Westphalia townships. In 1880, according to the U.S. Census, John, whose age was incorrectly given as 19 [he turned 21 in July that year], was in his father's household in Cass Township, and "farms" was given as his occupation.
