Mathias was 6 years old when the Gubbels family left the Netherlands for America--sailing on the Plymouth Rock from London, England to New York, New York, where they arrived on May 15, 1862. The Gubbels family first settled in Jamestown Township, Grant County, Wisconsin, where in 1870, the U.S. Census lists Mathias, as age 14 and works on farm, in his father's household.
In 1874, the Gubbels family moved to Shelby County, Iowa, where they farmed in Cass and Westphalia townships. In 1880, according to the U.S. Census, Mathias, whose age was given as 23 was in his father's household in Cass Township, and "farms" was given as his occupation.
Mathias and Elziabeth Gubbels moved to Texas, evidently settling in Fort Bend County, at Rosenberg, as that is where they would be buried. Mathias's brother Peter and his wife Mary also moved to Texas.
