The Gubbels family settled in Jamestown Township, Grant County, Wisconsin, where in 1870, the U.S. Census has the household consisting of John, age 49, farmer; Martha, 46, keeping house; Peter, 21, works on farm; Jacob, 17, works on farm; Mathias, 14, works on farm; John, 11; and Wilhelm, 5.
In 1874, the Gubbels family moved further west, to Shelby County in Iowa, where they again farmed. In 1880, the Gubbels family was split between two households: The first was in Cass Township and consisted of John, age 59, farmer; Martha, 56, keeping house; Matthias, 23, farms; John, 19, farms; and William, 14, farms. The second was in Westphalia Township, where Jacob Gubbels, age 26, farmer, now had his own family, and also in his household was his brother Peter, 30, farmer.
