Notes about Friedrich Ludwig Abresch

ABRESCH (Frederik Lodewijk) een beroemd Letterkundige, verdient, ofschoon geen Nederlander van geboorte, hier eene plaats, aangezien hij de grootste tijd zijns levens in ons vaderland heeft doorgebragt. Hij werd den 29 December 1699 te Homburg an der Höhe, een stadje in Hessen-Homburg, geboren; studeerde aanvankelijk aan het akademisch gymnasium te Herborn en vervolgens te Utrecht, waarna men hem in 1723 tot Conrector en twee jaren later tot Rector der Latijnsche scholen te Middelburg aanstelde. In deze stad ontving hij den 7 Maart 1731 zijne benoeming tot Leetor in de Geschiedenis en Welsprekendheid; doch werd in 1741 tot Hoogleeraar in de zelfde vakken te Zwolle beroepen, waar hij in 1782 overleed. De groote Wyttenbach(1) getuigt van hem, dat hij niet alleen tot de voornaamste letterkundigen van zijnen tijd behoorde, maar, op het voetspoor van den Leydschen hoogleeraar Alberti, het Nieuw Testament uit de oude Grieksche schrijvers leerde op te helderen. Hij gaf te dien einde zijne Dilucidationes Theologicae, quibus et passim tum Novi Testamenti, tum aliorum scriptorum loca illustrantur aut emendantur uit.
Voorts heeft men van hem, behalve nog eenige stukken in geleerde Tijdschriften:
