Notes about Nicolaus Franciscus "Klaas" Disco

Op 23 februari 1793 trokken de eerste Franse soldaten het dorp binnen. Deze ‘bevrijding’ ging gepaard met een inbeslagname van 60 pond rundvlees en 840 pond tarwebrood. De Franse bezetting was van korte duur, want in maart vertrokken de troepen weer.

Ruim een jaar later kwamen ze terug en in februari 1795 begon een langdurige bezetting van het dorp door de Fransen. Ze nestelden zich in de kerk en toonden weinig eerbied voor de hervormde godsdienst. Ze braken de preekstoel en de kerkbanken af om er brandhout van te maken.
Niet alleen dominee Lotichius beklaagde zich over de behandeling door de Franse troepen, maar ook pastoor Eijmberts luchtte zijn hart in het trouwboek van 1797: „Is dit nu die vrijheid, gelijkheid, broederschap die de Franse republikijnen wilden brengen?. Die de Belgen in de tien Oostenrijckse Provintien handhaaven? Judicet Deus (God weet het).”

De omwenteling verliep in Wouw verder heel kalm, want op 11 maart 1795 kwamen de inwoners bijeen in de Roomse kerk, een schuurkerk bij de pastorie, waar ze het nieuwe gemeentebestuur van veertien personen kozen.

Op 18 augustus 1795 werd voor het raadhuis de vrijheidsboom geplant en in 1803 werd het bestuur gereorganiseerd. De plaatselijke rechtbank werd opgeheven en de functie van drossaard verdween.
Het gemeentebestuur telde toen zeven leden en had Johannes Baptista Adan als president.

Toen Napoleon in 1810 Nederland inlijfde bij het Franse keizerrijk, kwamen er opnieuw grote veranderingen. Op 8 november 1810 werd een groot aantal gemeenten opgeheven, waaronder Moerstraten. Die gemeente werd aan Wouw toegevoegd.

In november 1813 kwam een eind aan de Franse tijd. Toen nam het Nederlandse bestuur het gezag weer in handen. Dat werd in de gemeentelijke administratie zichtbaar, omdat vanaf die tijd de aktes van de burgerlijke stand in het Nederlands werden opgesteld.
