Willem de veldwachter, had als het ware een vaste baan.
In 1868 had de veldwachter, volgens het Boek: Rijen, Ontstaan, Groei, en Ontwikkelimg, een vaste jaarlijkse gage van f 225,- , daarnaast mocht hij vrij wonen en kreeg hij enige dienstkleding (jas, broek, en pet) en een wapen.
In 1850 werd melding gemaakt van enige emolumenten die hij genoot.
Zo mocht hij als 'vanouds' op een aangewezen heideveld turf steken tot een totaal van twaalf karren per jaar, het hoofdgras dat op de Wierkstraat groeide oogsten en verder driehonderd masten mustaards (takkenbossen van dennenhout; musterds) en drie karren masten brandhout uit de bossen halen.
Hij moest ook zorgen voor het 'kleppen van de klok bij gemeentelijke afkondigingen, als tot aanduiding van het uur tot sluiting der herbergen(..) het uitsteken der vlaggen en het luiden bij feestvieringen'
Hiervoor kreeg hij per jaar zes gulden extra uitbetaald
Veldwachter Willem Metsaars ging met pensioen toen hij 55 jaar was.
Het salaris en wat daarmee samenhing werd in de loop van de jaren steeds aangepast.
Het onderstaande moet ik nog uitzoeken:
Willem kocht stukjes heide grond op en begon rond 1895 de leerlooierij W Metsaars.
Hij ging met pensioen in 1904, het jaar waarin zijn zoon Jan trouwde.
