Sadly, we don't bear the name Tigchelaar as he appears to have been our maternal grandfather and it doesn't appear that they ever married. We think possibly that she left her husband to be with Jacob after having an affair but again possibly after my mother was born and her birth registered. We are only a day or so into this so still trying to make sense of it. We remembered that name as my mother spoke of him affectionately and said she wished he had been her father so that when it came up amongst potential relatives, we recognised it immediately. It's so sad that my mother who was very fond of him had that relationship removed from her (if things are as we believe) by deceit. It must have been awful for him as well, thinking he had a daughter and then to be told otherwise and all contact removed. I haven't found out whether he had any legitimate children.
Things were very different back then; the family were obviously aware at some point hence her being completely disowned. I think she was pretty tough though and ended up destroying other relationships she had including that with her daughter, our mother Ann Helen. It would be nice, especially for Adrian's sons to know their heritage.
Thank you again for responding to what was, probably a bit of an odd message

Is this the same man? He lived with our grandmother and we believe he is our maternal grandfather. My mother always believed he was even though her mother put another name on her birth certificate although as a young child she was known as Helen Tigchelaar. It was in all her school books. To be honest we didn't talk much about it to my mother who is dead now we just know that she had always believed it to be true until there was a huge family row and her mother denied what she had told her all those years. My brother recently did a DNA test out of interest not expecting to be anything but British and his DNA results were pretty surprising when these links with the name Tigchelaar came up. We found this document showing that they were living together in London and did so for some years and wondered if he is the same Jacob Tigchelaar.
