7. Ernest John Henley 1889 - 1962
Ernest was a tailor, and a keen and successful amateur athlete. In 1912 he was aStockholm Olympics bronze medallist as a member of the 4x400m relay hurdles team. Hisathletics interests included a lifetime of participation in the Sussex Amateur AthleticsAssociation and the Brighton and Hove Harriers, and at one time he held many Sussex andBritish records at all distances up to the mile.
Ernest was born on 31 March 1889 in Brighton, the son ofGeorge Henley and Mary Ann Button. In due course Ernest, like his elder brother George and his two younger brothersAlbert and Hubert, also became a tailor, apprenticed to hisfather. At the age of 20 he took a job at the large Brightondepartment store Hannington's, where he worked - with regularpromotions - until his retirement.
However, he also became a keen amateur runner, joining theBrighton and County Harriers (in 1909, the same year hestarted working at Hannington's) and the Sussex AmateurAthletic Association. During his first two years of athletics hewon at various distances up to 880 yards in Sussexcompetitions, and in 1912 was third in the national AAA 880yards.
At Stamford Bridge in the 1912 Olympic trials he wassent to run as second string to Tommy Adams, alreadyknown as a leading quarter-mile runner, in a 400 metresOlympic trial. He won that race in 49 seconds, on a slowtrack. He was selected for the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, and competed in the 800 metres and the 4 x 400m relay.
He won his heat of the 800 metres, beating the Bavarian Ernest Henley's Olympic
record-holder Hans Braun into second place: it was
reported that Hans Braun commented "You are the only Englishman who has everbeaten me".
