· Edward James Button disappeared from Brighton after 1871, and it seems that hereappeared only for the 1901 census in which he is recorded as being a lodger with hisbrother William Henry in Dartford, Kent. It is a matter of pure specualtion where he wasin the intervening years, but it seems likely that he left England with his brother Albert -but their ways parted when Albert jumped ship in New Zealand. Perhaps Edward Jamescontinued travelling the world as a merchant seaman for the next 25+ years.

We have been looking for any information on Edward James Button born 1854 in Brighton, Sussex, and who disappeared from UK records after the 1871 census.
What we have found is Edward James Button, butcher, who died in a gun accident at Mellum Creek, Queensland in January 1889, aged "about 32". He left a will, but it's lost - not in the Queensland archives. There was an inquest, and the transcript survives. Can order a copy but doubt if it will cast much light on his identity. In 1886 there was an Edward Button, butcher, who was robbed in Hyde Park, Sydney. In 1882 an Edward James Button, ship's butcher on the "Potosi", landed in Sydney. In 1897 a 'long lost relatives' enquiry in the Australian Town and Country Journal was published (copied from the Lloyd's Weekly London newspaper) for Edward James Button of Hackney-road London "came to Australia in October 1882 in the 'Potosi'; was heard of in Sydney in 1886. Sisters ask".
