In memoriam van Carol, dochter van Joseph van Beek
My tribute to my Dad, Joseph Van Beek,
by Carol Van Beek.
I remember my Dad as always being there. He was either giving piano lessons in another room in the house, or studying, or preparing lessons or grading papers. I owe my Dad everything. He gave me a love of learning and a knowledge of music as life long gifts. He was the only parent I knew who took us kids to the big library downtown. He took us on day trips to places like Gerber Baby Foods and Kelloggs to see how things were made. When I was seven, he took me to Chicago to see their great museums. I got to go down in a coal mine and tour a German submarine and see the biggest dollhouse in the world. Also, when I was seven, I got my first season tickets to the symphony concerts. Everything with my Dad was about education and I couldn't have asked for a better one. We went to the Henry Ford Museum. We went to see a Detroit Tigers game where the first game was between two female teams and I learned that girls could do the same things as boys. We went to a mission on skid row to see how some lost souls live. If it was educational, you name it, we went. My entire adult ability to provide for my own livelihood I owe to my Dad. My musical education started when I was five and continued as long as I lived under his roof. Sharing his gift to me, teaching music to others, and playing music for others, has provided a roof over my head as well as over the heads of my kids. Without the upbringing and education provided by my Dad, I wouldn't be the person I am today. To him, I am eternally grateful. Thank you Dad.
