61 years ago this week, my Father Dirk Den-Baars escaped from a Japanese death camp on the Island of Java in Indonesia called Ambarawa! He was not an American citizen at that time, he was a Dutch citizen of Dutch/Indonesian blood captured by the Japanese Kempetai Police who were as sadistic as the Nazi SS!! He was an 18 year old high school student when The Dutch surrendered Indonesia on march 15th, 1942. He and other friends hid in the jungles til he was captured on june 6th, 1942. Imprisoned for the next three and a half years also in the camps Tjipinang, and Suka Miskin, he endured constant beatings, torture, starvation, and being nearly worked to death! He was forced at bayonet point to watch dozens of victims be decapitated, those who looked away or closed their eyes were killed also! In 1985 my Father was awarded the Royal Dutch Resistance cross for actions of guerilla sabotage that he committed against the Japanese occupiers before his capture. The Japanese never apologized to him... He died of cancer in Nov. 2003 shortly after he had finally agreed to my brothers and i to start recording his wartime experiences, now it is up to my brothers and i to keep his stories from being forgotten! He knew that the best place to start a new life after going through hell was to move to America which he did in 1956 after attending College in the Netherlands and getting a Degree in Geology. My Father's name is not on many POW lists because he was not an American Citizen or soldier at the time, but i did at the last minute get his name in the Book "They opened their Hearts" Published by Voices about Tucson elders telling their wartime experiences, i am glad for that! The Dutch say: "Niet Vergeten" (Never Forget!) I never will forget his numerous stories of what he went through!
