SPRING VALLEY -- A public memorial service for John A. Swygman will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Griffin Funeral Home in Stewartville, with cq not rev Norbert Kropowski officiating. A private family graveside service will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in Woodland Cemetery in Stewartville.
Mr. Swygman, 81, of Spring Valley, a retired Racine-area farmer, died Saturday (June 15, 1996) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester of an aortic aneurysm suffered on Friday.
He was born May 18, 1915, in Allison, Iowa, moved to the Stewartville area as a child with his family, grew up in the Stewartille-High Forest area and attended area rural schools. On May 19, 1938, he married Caroline Ostendorf in Stewartville and they farmed in Racine Township for more than 40 years. She died March 2, 1987. He married Faye Comegys Hall on Nov. 17, 1990, in Rochester. She is a homemaker. They had resided in Spring Valley since 1991. Mr. Swygman was a member and elder of the Spring Valley congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. An avid horseman, he raised Belgian draft horses.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Jane (Mrs. Richard) Kautz of Rochester and Margaret (Mrs. Doug) Faulhaber of Loveland, Colo.; two sons, Robert of Colleyvile, Texas, and Wayne of Coon Rapids, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Gail Thomas of Seminole, Texas; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Irene Hanson of Rochester. Nine brothers preceded him in death.
