AUSTIN -- John G. Ganser, age 87, of Austin, died Saturday, March 11, 2006, at the Adams Health Care Center.
He was born Jan. 12, 1919, in Owatonna, Minn., to John and Gertrude (Stevens) Ganser. He graduated from Owatonna High School and attended one year at the University of Minnesota. He served in the United States Navy during WWII. He married Harriette Swygman on Nov. 8, 1941, in Reno, Nev. He was the Chief of Civilian Personnel for the United States Air Force in Washington D.C. and later in the Twin Cities. He retired in 1975. John and Harriette moved to Austin in 1980.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge in Washington D.C., and the First Congregational Church, Golden Age Kiwanis, American Legion Austin Post #91, and B.P.O.E. #414 (Elks) in Austin. He enjoyed reading, traveling, working on home projects, playing cards, and being with family and friends. He was also a baseball, pro football, and golf enthusiast.
He is survived by his son, John R. (Rita) Ganser, of Austin, Minn.; grandchildren: Heidi (Phil) Leise, of Minneapolis, Minn.; John A. (Daniella) Ganser, of Shoreview, Minn.; Adam Ganser and fiancee Alissa Gardner, of Baltimore, Md; great-grandchildren: Noah Leise, Julia Leise, Gabriella Ganser; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Harriette, in 1996; and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at the First Congregational Church with The Rev. James Peck officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Visitation will be held at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary today from 5-7 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday for one hour before the service.
Organist will be Ernie Murphy. Soloist will be Kaye Perry. Casket bearers will be Phil Leise, John A. Ganser, Adam Ganser, Joe Collins, Malcolm McDonald and Beryl Buchan.
