Mackintosh (Borlum/Surinam)
In 1686 Henry (or Harry) Mackintosh was the owner of plantation Fairfield, on the Commewijne river in Surinam [see Phillip Dikland's database of plantation in Surinam]. He was of the 'Maclintosh of Borlum' family in Inverness-shire. He married Elizabeth White in London and had two sons, William (1694) and Hendrik/Henry (1695), both born in Surinam. Henry Mackintosh jnr inherited the property but probably left Surinam at a young age and settled in Bristol, Rhode Island, and from 1708 the plantation was leased to a Thomas Carruthers.
The plantation passed to Henry Mackintosh jnr's daughters, Elizabeth and Mary, and to their descendants who were, by this time, regarded as Americans. In 1774 Fairfield was visited by John Stedman.
