From the Pella Chronicle newspaper: Former Pella Lady Killed in Des Moines
Miss Apalonia De Haan, who lived here in her childhood, lost her life by being struck by a car in Des Moines Monday of this week. The accident was not witnessed and it is not known who the driver of the car was. Miss De Haan was unconscious when found and was taken to the hospital where she died without regaining consciousness. She was 70 years of age and had lived in Des Moines for 55 years. Her brother, Chris De Haan has been in the dental supply business there. She is survived also by twosisters. Another brother, Matthew, formerly lived at Lineville, Iowa and was well known in the state as a cheese maker. After his death, his widow lived in Pella a few years and still owns a property. So far as we know, no relatives of the deceasedlady now live in this vicinity. The family burial place is here, however, and the body was brought to Pella for interment Wednesday afternoon.
