Evelyn Kuyper was born on January 28, 1912 at Carmel in northwest Iowa. She was the last of 15 children that were born to Gysbert and Ella De Jong Kuyper. Evelyn began her elementary education at a country school which she attended until her parents moved to Sioux Center, Iowa. She continued her education at the Sioux Center Public Schools where she graduated from high school in 1930.
Evelyn then taught in a rural school northwest of Sioux Center for one year. Evelyn began nurses training in 1932 at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated and received her Registered Nurse degree in 1934. Evelyn worked at a small hospital in Hull, Iowa for three years and then went to California and worked one year in a hospital there. For three years she worked in a doctor’s office and went out at night with him to deliver babies.
On December 18, 1941, she was united in marriage with Ernest Garnmeister and they lived in Rock Rapids, Iowa. Evelyn was the Lyon County Public Health nurse and continued taking summer classes at Iowa State in Ames, Iowa and Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa to obtain her Bachelor of Science degree along with her R. N. Her husband, Ernest Garnmeister, passed away on September 22, 1957.
In 1960 Evelyn became the Public Health Nurse for the State of Iowa. Evelyn met William Huyser at a family reunion and on August 16, 1968, they were united in marriage at a Presbyterian Chapel in St. James, Minnesota by nephew, Rev. Gilbert Kuyper. Their marriage was made special by a love for family, which Evelyn did not previously have, as William had seven married children along with several grandchildren. They all bonded and had a very happy life as a family. Evelyn and William had mutual interests in antiquing, family gatherings and picnics, traveling and church activities. Then on July 18, 1972, William passed away.
William’s children remained faithful to Evelyn as a step-mother and she always said: “God truly had blessed her with a caring Christian family”. Evelyn retired from nursing in 1976 having spent 43 years in the profession. Evelyn continued to reside in Pella, Iowa the remainder of her life where she stayed active in church activities at the Third Reformed Church as long as her health permitted. She enjoyed being a homemaker, loved her acquired families and liked the outdoors and nature. She was always willing to assume her responsibility for cook-outs and was thoughtful of each and everyone in happy times as well as in sickness and death.
Evelyn passed away on Thursday morning, April 10, 2008, in the Long Term Care Unit at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella, Iowa where she had been transferred from the Hilltop Manor North just 8 days previously. She attained the advanced age of 96 years, 2 months and 12 days.
