Notes from Margaret Buitenbos: . Dirk was born 1834 Lyden Holland- When he was 13 yrs old he went with a group of Hollanders who were part of the early grand exodus from the Netherlands to the US under the leadership of Dominie Hendrik Pieter Scholten. The story is that the Hollanders gathered their families, bags and baggage and a huge chest of gold and departed for the US. Records indicate the they arrived on June 19, 1849. They may have arrived in Iowa in August after a journey up the Mississippi River.
In 1854 Dirk married Johanna De Velder. By then, the Hollanders were looking for cheaper land, and he and three others took a wagon train to Oregon, which took six months, Although he took the Union Pacific back, a trip that took only a few weeks. Some Hollanders did migrate to Washington, but Derk and his family made the decision to continue to look for land in the mid west Those who left for Washington included Isac DeVries, Leendert Vandermeer and Pieter Noteboom.
In 1855 he relocated his family to Sioux County IA, and was one of the first White Settlers of Sioux County. There he stayed, through the years of the civil war. He and Leendert Vandemeer were founders of a new church in Pella, and this may be part of the reason for his move to Sioux County IA. Later, in 1881 a mass meeting of all Hollanders interested in cheaper lands was held at Orange City, Iowa, and Frank Le Cocq, Leendert Van der Meer, and Dirk Van den Bos were selected to investigate land in Dakota Territory. After several days of travel, they selected a location in western Douglas County. Their reports of the fertile prairie land and its promise of prosperity induced friends and relatives .
Dirk filed on the quarter adjoining Harrison, SD and lived there many years. On February 8, 1900 Mrs. Vanden Bos died ( besides her family already mentioned she also had a brother J. W. De Velder and a sister Mrs. Johannes Klein of Sioux Center, Iowa surviving her) (She was 64 years of age, Rev. Kamps of New Holland conducted the service) ..... Two years later he moved back to Sioux Center, Iowa, where on July 25, 1902, he was married to Mrs. Dena Ver Duin, who together with 6 children and a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren are left to mourn his departure. The remains were brought back to Harrison and funeral services were held in the Christian Reformed Church of which deceased had been a member for many years and internment was made in the Harrison Cemetery beside the grave of his first wife. Rev Guikema conducted the service
"Corsica newspaper, S.D. May 10, 1917: Friday the burial took place of D. V. D. Bos who died at Sioux Center. Also he was one of the first settlers in the Dutch Settlement who suffered the adversity/misfortune of the first years. Late on he left for Sioux Center. Also he was one of the first tradesman of Orange City in 1870. The service took place at Harrison, he was buried in the cemetery over there. He reached the age of 83 years. We could not refrain from mentioning this."
From Linda Vanderlinden:
"May 3, 1917 from the Sioux County newspaper, I don't know which paper: Mrs. John Schaap of here received yesterday news out of Sioux Center of the death of her stepfather, Mr. Dirk Van Den Bosch/Bos there. The deceased had the age of almost 82 years reached. This afternoon the funeral will take place from the Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, and in the evening the physical mortal remains will be transported to Harrison, South Dakota."
