William was born on a farm near Orange City IA, Jan 1 1872, being among the first white settlers in the County of Sioux Center. When he was a boy, the family moved from Orange City, to the vicinity of Harrison South Dakota where the family lived on a quarter adjoining Harrison. Here he grew to manhood, helping with the many chores that were to be done amongst a growing family. He became a member of the Christian Ref. Church in his youth and remained a faithful member to that church all his life.
On January 18, 1894, he was married to Margaret Boer who had come to this country form the Netherlands when she was 14 years old. They made their home on farms near Harrison for the first 24 years of their married life. Their twelve children were all born in Douglas county.
Though the crops were usually poor in these years they had their social events too, meeting at different homes and enjoying singing. They also enjoyed visiting a great deal with relatives and friends.
To supplement, their Dad and Uncle Jake went out breaking prairie in the summertime. With a little "House" on their wagon, they would stay overnight on the prairie whenever they were far away from home. [As] Another means to supplement their income in the wintertime, they would put up ice and pack it in sawdust in ice houses. In 1918 they decided to go farther west where larger farms were available, so they moved to Charles Mix County where they farmed for almost 23 years. This moving all had to be done the hard way on horses or on foot.
Living in these years required doing many things yourself, such as repairing shoes, repairing harnesses for the work-horse, butchering and curing meat,: [these] were the among the things he could do well. He also enjoyed fishing.
In 1920 their oldest daughter was married. This was to be the first in a long line of weddings in the Vanden Bos family. Later, in 1939, when South Dakota was 50 years old, William received a certificate stating that he had been resident for 56 years. Early in the 1941, they moved to Platt to retire. On Jan th, 1944, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. He lived to enjoy 41 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
