Laura Lawson (4625) heeft in haar stamboom de volgende informatie verzameld. He started his life on the family homestead located on preakness Ave., Preakness, NJ. When he and Tryna Kuiken married they resided in the little white house behind Walt's Parent's, Fred and Lizzie. They purchased a farm on yhe far side of Preakness where they raised their 4 children. Walter and 2 of his brothers, Nicholas and John, started "Sikkema Brothers" dairy farm, using the old homestead to raise corn to feed their cattle. They also build milk processing plant, changing the business name to "Preakness Dairy, inc." They picked up milk from the surrounding farms and they bottled and delivered it to homes in the area. The creamery was heavily damaged by fire in the 1930's. They rebuilt the structure, but on August 26, 1943, disaster struck again-the headlines read: $34,000 Damage is Estimated in Preakness Dairy Barn Fire 60-Stall Enclosure is levelled by Flames- $9,000 Worth of Cattle Feed is Destroyed. The main 60 stall barn of Preakness Dairy,Inc., near Mountain Ave. and Naacht Punkt Road, burned to the ground yesterday afternoon. Walter Sikkema one of the brothes owning the building, looked out a window of his adjoining home at 12:30 and saw flames coming from the west end of the building. He telephoned for the firemen, and when they arrived a few minutes later the structure was a roaring blaze. Loss of the building and equipment is valued by the owners at $25,000. In addition cattle feed worth $9,000 was destroyed. Eleven fire vehicles and their crews battled the blaze, and kepth the flames from spreading to the bottling plant, residence and other structures. Fire companies on the scene were: Community No. 1, Property Owner's League No. 2, Preakness Volunteer No. 3, Prompton Falls No 4, all of Wayne Township, two trucks from Totowa Borough, and the Rescue Squad of Little Falls Fire Department. Wayne Township Police Officers William Luyster and William Taylor and Auxilary Policeman David Newcomb were assisted in traffic handling by Officer Harold Betts of Totowa Borough police force, and Ernest Nichols of the Passaic County Park Commission. All of the livestock owned by the Sikkema Brothers was out in the pasture at the time of the fire, the cause of which was not determined.
