Willem F. Feber
Norfolk - Willem Frans Marie Feber, 96, on March 15, 2015, the world lost a true international, bon-vivant and raconteur. He was a man of the world, a World War II veteran, Dutch Naval officer, multi-linguist, math-wiz, accomplished bridge player and ballroom dancer.
Born on the Indonesian island of Java on May 21, 1918, Willem traveled around the world as a youth and, later, while in the Royal Dutch Navy.
Willem lived a full life others only dream of.
As a young Dutch naval officer he saw action in World War II's Pacific Theater including the Battle of Java Sea.
He married his lifelong soulmate, Emilia "Millie" Eussen, after the war and eventually immigrated to the U.S. in the 1950s where he carved out successful careers as a director and residence manager of the Norfolk YMCA.
He was a music lover who enjoyed everything from opera to big band swing. A voracious reader, he loved the westerns of Zane Grey and German writer Karl May, Tarzan adventures and World War II thrillers and histories. A robust man, he was an expert swimmer, dancer and formidable racketball player who was goalie for his Dutch Naval Academy team. In addition, he was a rabid international soccer fan and longtime Washington Redskins supporter.
As a devoted family man, he was a strict disciplinarian with a keen sense of humor, who raised his two sons, Robert and Eric, with a stern, yet loving hand. His final years were content and happy ones thanks to the care and devotion of his eldest son Robert and daughter-in-law JoAnn.
The world is a little diminished with his passing. He certainly was a member of "the greatest generation." Long live Willem".
He is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Emilia Feber and sisters Anneke Feber and Jeule D.C. Buning.
He is survived by his son Robert Feber and wife JoAnn, son Eric Feber and wife Marian, three grandchildren, Claire Feber and Phillip Billups, Ryan Feber and wife Shanda, and Kelly Feber Fanniff and husband Todd, and a great grandson , Marcell Billups., nephew Frederik D.C. Buning and wife Lisbeth, nieces Suzette de Vos and husband Henry , and Antoinette Wallis de Vries and husband Gijs, and Marianne Eussen and husband Johan and many relatives in the Netherlands.
A private family ceremony will be held in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Online condolences may be sent to the family through hdoliver.com
