Norfolk - Emilia Christina " Millie " Feber , age 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday , July 1, 2014.
The world lost a talented, vivacious lady who lived on three continents.
She was born and raised on a tea plantation on the island of Sumatra in the Indonesian archipelago. She lived there until the Japanese occupied the islands during WWII; she was interned in a Japanese prison camp for three-and-a-half years with her brother, mother and other Dutch colonials.
After the war she was reunited with the Dutch Naval officer - William Frans Marie Feber - she met before the war, they were married and repatriated to the Netherlands. She bore two sons, Robert and Eric, and moved with her husband to Norfolk, who was assigned to NATO's SACLANT headquarters.
While in Tidewater, the Febers made many friends and came to love the American way of life. After his tour of duty, Willem Feber resigned his commission and moved his wife and two sons back to Norfolk.
Millie worked for many, many years as a medical secretary for Dr. William Taliaferro while raising two sons. During her tenure with the doctor she made many friends and seemed to know everybody in Ghent. And everyone knew her. She couldn't walk anywhere locally without someone shouting "hey, Millie, how are you today?" All the while she perfected her cooking talents and was expert at Indonesian cuisine and, of course, hearty Dutch dishes. At one point she mastered the art of candy-making. She was a talented artist who was adept at decoupage, oil painting and colored pencil sketching. She was fluent in Dutch, French, English, German and Indonesian/Javanese. She loved a hearty laugh and could be rendered to tears watching a Tweety & Sylvester cartoon or a Benny Hill episode.
She will be missed, but she is now at peace and reunited with her beloved brother, father and mother
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Willem Frans Feber, son Robert Feber and wife JoAnn, son Eric Feber and wife Marian, three grandchildren, Claire Feber and Phillip Billips, Ryan Feber and wife Shanda, and Kelly Feber Fanniff and husband Todd, niece Marianne Eussen and husband Johan, sister in law Anneke Feber, and many relatives in the Netherlands.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Michael Camp, M.D. for his kindness and compassion during this time.
A private family ceremony will be held in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
