Homer Howell Cohoe, the only child of Doctor Winslow Cohoe and Jennie Howell, was born in Harristown, Illinois. Homer's father, Doctor, was attached to company E of the 92nd Illinois infantry during the Civil War and is buried in the Gerlane Cemetery. Homer's mother, Jennie Hicks, moved to Barber County in 1928 and located in the town of Hazelton until her death in 1950.
Homer and Edna Amelia Wormser were married on March 15, 1903, in Norton ville, Kansas. They had four children: Melvin Howard, Dorothy Ethel, Claude Earnest, and Ethel Lucille.
In 1917 Homer Howell Cohoe bought a farm from the original homesteader, Perry Ward. He was a farmer and raised cattle and chickens. The farm is located three miles northwest of Kiowa. The family built a new home on the farm in 1926. All the children of Homer and Edna settled in Barber County.
