Attended the School for Trades in Stuttgart, where as a talented student he won various prizes. In Basel he worked first as a technical assistant in the Buildings Department of the then Swiss Central Railway, and then [after marriage] as an architect. He designed the synagogue in Basel (at the corner of Eulerstrasse and Leimenstrasse) which was ceremonially consecrated on 9.9.1868 just after his death. During his short life, apart from the synagogue, he only designed a few houses, namely: an annexe to the former Gundeldingerschlösschen, Haus Nauenstrasse 1 (now demolished), Haus Schützenmattstrasse 51 (Simmoth-Speiser, also now demolished), Haus Faesch-Kiener on the Kornhausgasse [presumably a misprint for Faesch-Kienle, Kornhausgasse 14, where his sister-in-law lived], and Haus Holbeinstrasse 48. He was a member of the Basel Guild of ‘Spinnwettern’.” [Julia Gauss, in Zum Zentenarium der Basler Synagoge. Israelitische Gemeinde Basel, 1968. p21–2]
