Notities over Wijnanda van Noordeloos

Born De Kerk. RC baptism witnessed by Cornelia Bloom.

Wijnanda Noordeloos marries very. She is a mere 15 years old when she marries Anthonie van rijn in 1750. This does not appear to have met with her parents’ aproval. A prenuptial is not available. But there is a kind of postnuptial between the parents of both spouses, in essence setting the couple up as farmers in Bunnik.

The name Van Rijn is ubiquitous in a region that is the Rhine Delta. The name Anthonie is also particularly popular among these Van Rijn, and there are several men by that name in the same village at about the same time. The overview of documents relating to Wijnanda’s husband is therefore incomplete, and may include documents that do not pertain to him. As such, few leases, but several documents related to Anthonie’s parents’ estate, which is a complicated affair, the result of father Elbert marrying twice and having children by both wives.

There are also several linkages with Van Bentum and Vlooswijk, but they all depend on finding out which son Jan marries which wife. The documents in the UA and the CR do not provide unequivocal information.

People: Cornelia van den Hogen, Elbert Anthonisse van Rijn, Cornelia van Rijn, Anthonie van Rijn, Geertruij van Rijn. Date: September 20, 1760. Reference: U197a5 act 37. Subject: Testament. Last will and testament of Elbert Anthonisse van Rijn and Cornelia van den Hogen. Elbert leaves his children by his first and second wife each a legitimate portion, and a child’s portion for his widow, of everything he brought into the marriage and acquired during the marriage. The children by his first wife had already inherited from their mother Cornelia van Oostveen. Cornelia van den Hogen leaves everthing to her three children. Son Anthonie is appointed excutor and guardian of any underage children.

People: Anthonij van Rijn, Elbert Anthonisse van Rijn. Date: September 29, 1765. Reference: U197a5 act 136. Subject: Lease.Anthonij rents 7 morgen cropland in Bunnik from his father, for 12 years, at a rent of Fl 84; land Anthonij was already using. The only two conditions are that on expiration Anthonij returns 2 morgen of land sown with wintergrain, in exchange of the 4 morgen of land sown with wintergrain he received at the start, and that he maintains the land.

People: Anthonij van Rijn, Elbert Anthonisse van Rijn. Date: September 29, 1765. Reference: U197a5 act 137. Subject: Lease.Anthonij van Rijn leease 3 morgen of meadow in Cattenbroek from his father for twice six years. The rent is Fl 36. He shall maintain the land and keep it from damages, and provide proper drainage.

People: Anthonie van Rijn, heirs of Anthonia van Rhoon. Date: October 3, 1765. Reference: U197a5 act 138. Subject: Acknowledgement of debt.Anthonie van Rijn borrows Fl 390/19/00 from Anthonia van Rhoon at an annual interest of 5%. The loan appears to have been paid back in May of the following year. I am not sure that this is the Anthonie van Rijn of this paper. The only identification mark is the mention that he is a resident of Bunnik. The document was also written by the same solicitor Anthonie’s parents used when they wrote their will. Neither am I sure if Anthonia van Rhoon was dead or alive at the time of writing this document. The wording gives the feeling that it is about an old debt that Anthonie had failed to pay back, and Anthonia’s heirs are now claiming. Hence also the higher than usual rate of interest. Yet, in the margin it says that the loan was paid back, to Anthonia van Rhoon, although her name could have been given to keep the text short.

People: The heirs of Elbert van Rijn by first wife Cornelia van Oostveen and second wife Cornelia van den Hogen, including Anthonie van Rijn. Date: January 25, 1766. Reference: U24214 act 85. Subject: Public sale. The children of Elbert van Rijn by both wives sell three plots of land, including the 3 morgen for which son Anthonie renewed the lease for 12 years only 4 months earlier. That land is sold to Jan Pesters, lord of Cattenbroek and member of the Utrecht States. He outbids Jan van Vechten, Anthonie’s brother in law. The second plot is sold to Hermanus Maren. Brother in law Anthonie Baars bids on the third plot, but it is not sold.

People: The heirs of Elbert van Rijn by first wife Cornelia van Oostveen and second wife Cornelia van den Hogen, including Anthonie van Rijn. Date: October 25, 1766. Reference: U225a7 act 108. Subject: Division of estate.Disposition of the estate of Elbert Anthonisse van Rijn and Cornelia van den Hogen, who seem to have died shortly after one another. The document is long and complicated. Long, 107 pages in scans, but fortunately many of them are half blank, and the lines are short. It is complicated because it is basically about three wills, that off Elbert, his first wife Cornelia van Oostveen and his second wife Cornelia van den Hogen. By Cornelia van Oostveen Elbert has four children. One of them is already dead and the disposition has to consider the shares of the three surviving ones and those of three grandchildren. They inherit from Elbert and Cornelia van Oostveen. By Cornelia van den Hogen Elbert has three children, and they inherit from Elbert and Cornelia van den Hogen. The document calculates Elbert’s and either Cornelia’s share in the estate. It therefore starts with a summary of the prenuptial agreement between Elbert and Cornelia van den Hogen, which also deals with his children’s rights to the estate of his deceased first wife. It also states that there is no community of property of the goods either brought into the marriage, only of the goods acquired during the marriage. It then reproduces verbatim the last will and testament of Elbert and Cornelia van den Hogen. This out of the way, the documents then describes the detailed inventory that the only son and executor, Anthonie van Rhijn, has made of all moving and unmoving properties, debts to be paid (including the funeral expenses), debts to be collected, consisting of twenty chapters. It then sets out to calculate the shares. First the children by Cornelia van Oostveen. The underage grandchildren Cornelia, Pieter and Stijntje van Oostrum (children of deceased Maria van Rhijn by Steven van Oostrum), each receive Fl 245 guilders/16/10. The three surviving daughters Wijnanda, Petronella and Anthonia van Rijn each received Fl 737/03/12. Second the children by Cornelia van den Hogen. They each receive Fl 1,126/10/12, but Anthonie receives 6 morgen of land worth Fl 450 guilders, and Anthonie Baars, husband of Geertruijda van Rijn, receives 3 morgen land worth Fl 370. Anthonie Baars and Geertruij van Rijn are the parents of Anthonia Baars who marries Wijnanda Vlooswijk, Engeltje Vlooswijk’s younger sister.

People: Anthonie van Rijn, Hendrik van Dam. Date: June 29, 1771. Reference: U269c1 act 29. Subject: Lease.Anthonie van Rijn leases 4 morgen of cropland in Bunnik from sollicitor Hendrik van Dam (who is the solicitor of many acts related to ancestors and their relations), for the sum of Fl 37, for 6 years.

People: Anthonij van Rijn, Wijntje (Wendalina) van Rijn, Gerrit van de Vecht, Pieter van de Vecht. Date: May 7, 1784. Reference: U264b5 act 16. Subject: Prenuptial.Prenuptial agreement between Gerrit van de Vecht and Wijntje van Rijn a.k.a. Wendalina. Gerrit brings in Fl 1,500. Wendalina brings in Fl 500. There is no community of property brough into the marriage or inherited during the marriage, but the two appoint each other as heirs of all, and as guardian over any children. Gerrit and Wendalina’s widowed son Petrus marries 42 years younger Adriana Broekhuijsen in 1849, daughter of Geertruijda van Bentum and Cornelis Broekhijsen, granddaughter of Huig van Bentum and Adriana Vermeulen. Huig van Bentum is the younger brother of Cornelis van Bentum, sons of Albert van Bentum and Hendrina Weerdenburg. Adriana Vermeulen is the cousin of Huig Vermeulen who first marries Johanna van Bentum, half-sister of Huig and Cornelis, by Albert’s first wife Cornelia van Schaik, sister of Goyert van Schaik. Huig Vermeulen marries second Cornelia van Rijn, daughter of Anthonie van Rijn and Wijnanda Noordeloos.

People: Anthonie van Rijn, Wijntje van Noordeloos, Jan van Rijn, Jacoba Stam. Date: January 29, 1789. Reference: U246b7 act 5. Subject: Prenuptial.Prenuptial agreement of son Jan van Rijn and Jacoba Stam. All goods brought into the marriage and inherited during the marriage are in community of property, either inherits all from the other, whomever dies first, except for the clothes and gold and silver jewelry, and either appoints the other as guardian of underage children. Jacoba Stam appears to have had no father, as she was assisted by her guardian Dirk van Oostveen, probably her mother’s brother, who may be related to Elbert Anthonisse van Rijn’s first wife Cornelia van Oostveen. However, mothers too are often the only assistant on these occasions, so every chance that Jacoba’s mother too was dead. The baptisms of Anthonie and Wijnanda’s children are listed on Genealogie Zuidoost Utrecht, and they include two sons by the name of Johannes, one born in 1763 and the other in 1769, both born in Bunnik. Which one is getting married? The document does not speak of the majority or minority of either spouse. Both had assistance, which could be because they were not yet legal adults, or because the occasion warrented the presence of close relatives. Jan 1769 would have been underage, Jan 1763 would have been a legal adult. But the document does not intimate which one gets married. There are two other Jan van Rijn in our story. One is married to Wijnanda Vulto and one is married to Wilhelmina Vulto. Wijnanda Vulto is the daughter of Gerrit Vulto and Cornelia van Bentum, sister of ancestor Cornelis van Bentum. Wilhelmina Vulto is the half-sister of Gerrit Vulto and the daughter of Frans Vulto and Merrigje van der Horst, daughter of ancestress Anna Vermeulen and her second husband Goyert van der Horst. Wilhelmina Vulto dies before 1800, her Jan probably remarries in 1797 to Willemina van Ewijk and dies in 1820, as the son of Jan van Rijn and Adriana Verhoef. The Civil Register on Genlias contains 14 records with the combination Rijn and Vulto, referring to three different couples. One of them is Jan van Rijn and Mergje Vulto, parents of Mergje van Rijn who diex at the age of 40 in Jutphaas in 1822, and is married to Arie van Wijk. Where to plug in this Mergje Vulto in the tree remains a mystery. The other one is Jan van Rijn and Wijnanda Vulto. Wijnanda dies aged 71 in Haarzuilens in 1853, the widow of Johannis van Rijn, but there is no record of Johannis’ death in the Civil Register. For Jan van Rijn husband of Wilhelmina Vulto there are only records of him in combination with Vulto as the father of Arie van Rijn, at his marriage and death. This Jan’s record of death can be found in combination with Ewijk. The Civil Register does not yet provide an answer to the question which Jan marries, 1763 or 1769. And neither does it give the information permitting the conclusion that one son Jan of Anthonij and Wijnanda marries Wijnanda Vulto. There are 23 records for the combination Rijn and Stam: parents of Hendrica van Rijn marrying Cornelis Remkes in 1819; Jan’s death in 1819 with no names for his parents, but a name for his wife; Jacoba’s death in 1828 with no names for her parents, but a name for her husband; and Wendelina’s death in 1866. However, the record of Jan’s death in 1819 says that he dies at the age of 58, which places his birth in 1761, two years before his baptism. I have bumped before into records with wrong ages for the deceased: ancestor Cornelis van Bentum is a case in point, was the Cornelis who died the first or second son Cornelis born to Albert van Bentum and Hendrina van Weerdenburg? There are two sisters called Cornelia Kippersluis, and when the younger dies she is mistaken for the elder one, as the age given at death places her birth in the year the elder one was born. There are 2 records for the combination Rijn and Noordeloos in the Civil Register, both referring to son Elbert’s death, identifying Maria Kolenberg as his wife. There are 8 records for the combination Rijn and Noorloos: son Gerrit’s death in 1819, identifying Maria van der Zanden as his wife; daughter Wijntje’s death in 1828; son Johannis’s death in 1838, at an age placing his birth in 1769, but no reference to his marrital status (neither mention of wife nor of his bachelorhood); and son Cornelius’s death in 1852, identifying Cornelia van Bemmel as his wife. Both sons of Anthonie van Rijn and Wijnanda Vulto by the name of Johannes live. For the moment it is most likely that Johannes I is married to Jacoba Stam, and possible that Johannes II is married to Wijnanda Vulto. In that case Johannes I goes through life as Jan and Johannes II as Hannes. Nevertheless further research is necessary to resolve this Jansonian puzzle.

People: Jacobus van Rijn, Anthonie van Rijn, Martinus Ouwers. Date: September 28, 1793. Reference: U224a11 act 41. Subject: Lease. Jacobus van Rhijn leases a farmstead, outbuildings and 26 morgen of meadow, hayland and hemp land in Zegveld. The lease is for 6 years. The rent if Fl 450, but over the first four years Jacobus only pays Fl 400 on condition that he uses Fl 50 every year, and proves it with receipts, to buy dung and spread it over the land. This is maybe a hint that he is leasing degraded land. The landlord is the Roman Catholic Orphanage in Utrecht, represented by Martinus Ouwers. Anthonie van Rijn guarantees the lease. Bunnik is about 4 kilometres east of Utrecht, Zegveld is about 12 kilometres west of Utrecht, which would argue that we are not dealing with the Anthonie van Rijn subject of this paper. However, he has a son Jacobus, land close to home may not be easy to come by, there are links with Harmelen midway between Utrecht en Zegveld, the landowner has his office in Utrecht, and Anthonie signs as ‘Antoni van Rijn’, as if just writing a name and with a spelling he uses consistently. The document does not say if Anthonie and Jacobus are father and son. They could have a different relationship, so there is no absolute certainty that we are dealing with Wijnanda Noordeloos’s Anthonie, but I suppose only a father would guarantee a lease to set his son up as a farmer. Wijnanda’s son Jacobus also has 5 older brothers, 4 of whom are known to survive into adulthood, so he is not really in line for inheriting his father’s land, giving Anthonie an incentive to help him set up his own farm elsewhere. However, in the following document dated five months later, a prenuptial, Jacobus is still a resident of Bunnik. Why would he be living 16 km away from his farm? Because, the lease does not start until May 1, 1794. An upcoming wedding would be a good occasion for setting up a son as an independent farmer. It is what Elbert did for Anthonie.

People: Jacobus van Rijn, Anthonie van Rijn, Gijsje Ruijs, Jan Ruijs. Date: February 22, 1794. Reference: U264b9 act 81. Subject: Prenuptial.Prenuptial agreement between Jacobus van Rijn and Gijsje Ruijs. The marriage is in full community of property. In the absence of children either inherits all should the other die. Should the surviving spouse then die half goes to the other’s heirs and half to the surviving spouse’s heirs. Should the surviving spouse remarry half the property is paid out to any children, should the surviving spouse remarry and there be no children half is then paid out to the dead spouse’s heirs. Excepted are, as usual, the clothes, gold and silver, which go to friends or the parents. Either appoints the other as guardian of any children. The signatures of Jacobus and Anthonie in this document look very similar to the ones in the document from September 1793, giving credence to the idea that the Jacobus leasing land 16 km away from home is Wijnanda Noordeloos’s son. Gijsje Ruijs is the daughter of Jan Ruijs and Anthonia Vermeulen. I have not yet been able to place this Anthonia anywhere in the forest, but Jan Ruijs is probably the son of Jan Willems Ruijs and Grietje Gerrits van Schaik, sister of ancestor Arie Gerritse van Schaik. He is also the half-brother of Judith Vreeswijk married to Jan van Wijk. Among their children: Adrianus van Wijk married to Maria van Rijn, daughter of Willemina Vulto and Jan van Rijn, parents of Arie van Wijk who married Johanna Pauw, daughter of Evert Pauw by his second wife Anna Kraaijkamp.

People: Anthonie van Rijn, Willem Nicolaas Pesters. Date: June 1, 1798. Reference: U269c7 act 231. Subject: Lease.76 years old Anthonie van Rijn leases a farmstead, outbuildings and 60 morgen cropland and meadow called Nieuwenhof in Cattenbroek, 4.5 morgen cropland in Bunnik and 3 morgen meadow called the Hak in Cattenbroek land from Willem Nicolaes Pesters. The land is again for 6 years. The total rent amounts to Fl 900 plus 30 pairs of pidgeons annually. The conditions are detailed, and imply additional rent payments: all the clover and grass needed to feed the landlord’s horses to be delivered over 6 consecutive weeks, maintenance of one hunting dog, the use of two carts and four horses over 4 days (so Anthonie joined the hunt), enough dung for the landlord’s garden (for which he gets 12.5 cents per sledge-load), and 10 barge-loads of ash or garbage. He is also charged to maintain the dykes, but can keep most of the wood he cuts, although he also has to replace dead trees. Anthonie’s farmhands and maids are not allowed to cross the landlord’s yard, but have to take the backpasage.Anthonie has been leasing the land for many, many years, although I have only found lease agreements for the Hak land, which once belonged to his father. However, this document confirms Anthonie as a tenant farmer of a sizeable plot.

People: Anthonie van Rijn, Wijnanda Noordeloos, their children. Date: December 23, 1804. Reference: U264b13 act 87. Subject: Testament.Last will and testament of Anthonie van Rijn and Wijnanda Noordeloos. In principle all goods are divided between the children. However, oldest son Elbert recives 5 morgen land in Vuijlcop on condition het pays Fl 2,073 to the estate. If he is unable to do so, it becomes a debt to the other children at 4% a year. Sons Elbert and Gerrit are appointe executors and organisers of their funeral.

People: Johannes van Rijn, Wijnanda Vulto, Gerrit Vulto, Cornelia van Bentum. Date: February 9, 1808. Reference: U270a29 act 14. Subject: Prenuptial.

Prenuptial agreement of Johannes (Jan, Hannes) van Rijn and Wijnanda Vulto. All goods brought into the marriage and acquired during the marriage are in community of property. Either appoints the other as heir if there are no children. Clothes, jewels, gold and silver go to the nearest friends or default heirs. Wijnanda’s parents sign promising to make no claim to any parental share should she die first. If there are children the suriving spouse inherits the moveable properties and the full usufruct of the remaining properties. Four or fewer children then have a legitimate share of one third; five or more have a legitimate share of one fifth.

Cornelia van Bentum, Wijnanda’s mother, is the daughter of Albert van Bentum and Hendrina van Weerdenburg, and their first born. I found no records of children born to Jan and Cornelia. The absence of assistants for Jan may indicate that his parents Anthonis van Rijn and Wijnanda Noordeloos were dead by 1808. However, there is no firm proof that this Jan is Anthonis’s son born in 1769. The fact that he is from Bunnik is the only hint at a link in this document.
