1 Chapter One SCHOLTEN ORIGINATION LUYDER ALEFSON
The record of the family begins in 1634, during the Thirty Years War (1618-48) in Germany. Luyder Alefsen with bag and baggage, loaded on a couple of cows, fled a village called Epe, Westphalen, Germany, for the relative safety of Gelre (now called Gelderland), The Netherlands. There he settled in Vorden where he met and married an attractive farmers daughter Stiene (Christina) Derksen Driessen Berenpas, the widow of Tuenis Berenpas. They lived on the Berenpas farm, which stood even then, as now, between Vorden and Ruurlo, to the right lane toward Wiersse.
Luyder and Christina were married on June of 1636, in Vorden, The Netherlands. There four of their six children were born, (three known) Daniel in October 1643, Derk who was born between 1645 and 1654, and Harmen in March 1655.

According to an old Scholten legend going back a hundred and fifty years, the Scholtens emigrated to the lowlands from Russia. The first traceable Scholten was Luyder Alefson, born in Epe in the 1600's. This was documented by a man referred to as Lentink, who had maintained genealogical records on stacks of index cards. The way the family tells it, Luyder married Stiene (Christine) Driessen, an attractive farmer's daughter, in 1636. Luyder and Christina were married on June of 1636, in Vorden, The Netherlands. The 1600's was "The Golden Age" in the Netherlands. During this period of time the country was experiencing the highest standard of living in the world. By 1626 the Dutch had purchased Manhattan Island, an area of 23,000 acres, from the Indians for "sixty guilders, ten shirts, eighty pairs of hose, ten guns, thirty bullets, thirty pounds of powder, thirty kettles and one copper frying pan. A fort was erected on the tip of the Island at the entrance of the Hudson River, so named after Captain Henry Hudson who reached the area in 1609. The Dutch a rightful claim on the land from Virginia to Canada, but few wanted to leave their homes to brave the wilds of North America. It's no wonder that Luyder chose The Netherlands as his home.
According to records, their six children were born to the couple, three known children were Daniel in October 1643, Derk who was born between 1645 and 1654, and Harmen in March 1655. Dirk Luyder Scholten, Luyder's son, was the first family member to begin using the surname Scholten. His children were also baptized "Scholten" since 1707. Derk, a shoemaker, also spent time as a Gatekeeper at the Keppel Manor. It is in this way that people from the community began to refer to him as the"Scholten".
Research Notes of Dr Ellman
I found a dissertation posted on the web which referred to Derk Luyders and Christine while they were in Germany. Christine Drissen's family carried the name Alef, which was adopted by Derk upon the marriage to Christine. I have found no records to substantiate this, but if someone chooses to search farther back into German records, this information would serve as good starting point.
Notes from the Van Zonderan History as provided by Ken Scholten and Gerrit Van Wissink: The meaning of the name Scholten: Village Headman. SCOLT was a title used since the Crusades, in Europe. A Scholt, or village headman, was hired to help keep law and order on an estate while the Lord was absent. References to a Scholt has been noted in Germany, France and Holland.
