Bertha and Harold Hamilton with sons Robert and Gerald and daughter Naomicame west to Granger Wash., in the heart of the Yakima Valley. Theyarrived soon after Joe and Johanna Kappel moved over to Auburn. Lookingfor work was their quest. My last recollection is they moved into thehouse their grandparents had vacated. Where I went to school was a fewroads over from this house. My parents and her husband were outworking. My parents were selling kippered salmon to the hops pickers andKK Warehouse workers. I would go to their house after school and stayuntil my parents came home. Sometimes their work took them to Yakima 25miles away. Making it rather late when they returned. Later Bertha andHam as they called him moved to Yakima. Here she worked picking hopsherself. Sometimes camping in the fields with her children. After theymoved there she baby sat my little brother Robert. He was a similar ageto her youngest son Gerald. It was real handy as my parents sold in thewarehouses in Yakima, Selah, and Cowiche areas. I stayed with friendsafter school who lived near by. Harold later obtained a job in Centraliafor the Union Pacific Railroad. Bertha and the children soon followedhim. We later moved to the coast also and always saw them at family gettogethers. Losing her daughter Naomi at a young age and her sisterLuella who passed away while visiting her were real heartaches forBertha. Bertha was a very devout christian woman. Always attendingchurch. Her church had camp meetings every summer for ten days and shewould drive up from Centralia to Auburn with several of her girl friendsto attend. It was her collections of family history which helped us inour search for family so we owe much to her.
