Bought Hotel in Kesley, Iowa for $6000. Arend ran the bar and Johannahad the dining room. They lived in the back.
Arend Rust was a big man. Originaly had red hair,later he turned bald buthe wore a large mustache. He always had a jolly laugh. He wouldn'tallow Johanna to take the children to church or let her go. In Germanythe bible was taught in school. It was very hard on her, so she taughther children religion at home.
Later in life he developed diabetes. Getting his foot too close to aheater in a friends truck, he burned his toe and it developed gangrene.It had to be amputated above the knee. John Harms and his son GeorgeRust made a coffin for his leg, and they buried it in his son Joe'scemetery plot in the Washington Reformed church cemetery.
Johanna and Arend stayed with their daughter Bertha Harms till hisrecovery. He complained of his missing foot being cold and hurting withpain. So the boys dug it up and buried it 6 ft deep. It
didn't bother him any more. He obtained an artificial limb and gotaround again. He drove a gray Whippet automobile. He took Ebalena alongso he had company. He was real good to the grandchildren. Giving thempennies and nickels. They would walk to the store to buy candy and icecream but the best present of all was the nickel tablets with the IndianChief on the front. They had fun drawling pictures. He gave Ebalena awatch for her 8th grade graduation.
Later the diabetes claimed his other leg. He had to spend the remainderof his life in a wheel chair. He had a shelf fitted over the arms so hecould read books and write. He had a minister friend who got him toreading religious literature. Arend became very religious himselfworrying in his later years about the family. On his death bed in thehospital he cried and begged them to meet him in Heaven. He passed awayDecember 24,1947.
