He started the lumber business in 1939 along with Ernest Hook when theypurchased the "old feed shed" from William Dryer. K.U. Harken hadpreviously been a partner with D.U. Harken in the John Deere and HudsonAutomobile business. The original lumber hard had been built about 1900for use as a livery stable where farmers brought their horses for shelterand feed when they came to town. In 1943 Ernest Hook sold his interestin the company to Ubbe Neymeyer who together with K.U. Harken ran theHarken-Neymeyer Lumber Company until 1946 when Harken purchasedNeymeyer's interest and established Harken Lumber Yard. In 1946, whenIvan Harken returned from the Navy, he went into the business with hisfather. Then Donald Harken returned from Army service and entered intothe business with his father and brother. Donald continued in thebusiness until 1953 when he left to enter a business in Cedar Falls. KarlHarken entered the business in 1955 after service in the Army. Precedingthe lumber business K. U. had been in the auto business in Aplington,Iowa. He and his brother D.U. harken began selling Hudson cars in 1919 -an early period in the car industry. He worked on a farm before he andhis brother went into the auto business.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, director of the State Savings Bankof Aplington, served on the Aplington Town Council many years. At onetime he was an officer of the Wood Products Company of Waterloo, Iowa
