Klaas Reemts Harken and his wife Berentje De Vries came from the areaaround Eilsum, Ostfriesland, Germany
Having served his time in military training for his fatherland, Reemtstarted for America in the year 1868. The following year he persuadedIsbrandt and Ubbe to come to America. Isbrandt and Ubbe accompanied bytheir friend Conrad Rigter, came
to America and settled in Ogle County, Illinois in 1869.
These four young men worked for farmers , saved their earnings, and thefollowing year sent money to their parents to come to this country,bringing the whole family together again.
The Klaas (Claus) Harken family departed from Breman, Germany and sailfor New York on June 9, 1870 on the SS America, a German ship, built in1862. Their latest residence was Hanover, Germany. At that time theages of the family were listed as Claus- 55; Bentje- 54; Martje - 23.Enne -17; Antke - 13; and Elisabeth - 8. (These vary somewhat from theages we have had for them.)
Enno was then seventeen years old. Reemt, Isbrandt, Martha, Ubbe, andAnka took unto themselves helpmates in Illinois. Martha married ConradRigter in 1870. Anke married Franz Bakker. Reemt married Anna Hayengaon April 25, 1873.
Isbrandt married Siebentje Brass on October 3, 1874, and Ubbe marriedMargretha Weichman on November 28, 1874.
In the early spring of 1875, Conrad Rigter and family and Ubbe Harken andhis wife heeded the advice of Horace Greeley, "Go West, Young Man," andcame to Butler County, Iowa where they settled on farms southwest ofAplington, Iowa In the spring of 1880 Isbrandt, with his wife, threesons, and one daughter, came to Iowa. It is not known what year Ennocame to Iowa. In 1883 Elizabeth accompanied by her parents came toIowa. She married George Heyer in 1884. They first lived southeast ofAustinville and later moved to Kamrar, Iowa.
Klaas Harken died in the Ackley vicinity and was laid to rest in theWestfriesland Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The four sons are alsoburied there. After Klaas Harken died, Berentje Harken went to Kamrar,Iowa and lived with her daughter, Martha Harken Rigter. She died fouryears later in 1892. She was laid to rest in the First PresbyterianCemetery near Kamrar. Two daughters, Martha and Eliz(s)abeth are alsoburied there. Their 2nd oldest daughter Anke Harken Bakker was laid torest in the cemetery at Forreston, Illinois.
