Siegfried or Sigefroy (c.922–15 August 998) is considered the first count of Luxembourg. He was actually count in the Moselgau and the Ardennes. He was also the advocate of the abbeys of Saint-Maximin de Trêves and Saint-Willibrod d'Echternach. He was a son of the Count Palatine Wigeric of Lotharingia and Cunigunda.

He had possessions from his father in Upper Lorraine. At the centre of his dominions he constructed the fortress of Luxembourg in 963. A town soon grew up around the castle. Though he used the title of count, the title "count of Luxembourg" was only applied to William some 150 years later.

Around 950, he married Hedwige (937–992), daughter of Eberhard IV of Nordgau. They had the following issue:

As to the father of Siegfried, the authorities are divided, whether he was Wigeric or Richwin the second husband of Kunigunda. There is no certain evidence but from certain indications Mr. Vannerius considers he was the son of Wigeri rather than of Richwin on account of lands held by Siegfrieds descendants. [Ref: Moriarty Plantagenet p246]
There is evidence that Siegfried was father of a son of the same name, and that he may be the father of the children given to the first Siegfried. If the latter was the son of Wigeric he could not have been later than 919 when Wigeric died but his son Frederick died in 1091, Henry in 1026, Thierry about 1047, and Adalberion after 1036. Accordingy for chronological reasons it would seem that they were likely to have been the sons of the younger Siegfried and grandsons of the first Siegfried. The point is not fully settled. Sigefroy d'Ardennes, né vers 922, mort en 998, fut le premier comte d'un territoire qui allait devenir le comté de Luxembourg. Il était fils de Wigéric, comte de Bigdau, puis comte palatin de Lotharingie, et de Cunégonde.

De son père, il reçut des biens en Haute-Lotharingie. Afin de les protéger efficacement, il fit construire en 963 au centre de ses domaines une forteresse, qui est le château de Luxembourg. Une ville se créa rapidement autour du château.

Siegfried or Sigefroy (c.922–28 Oct 998) is considered the first count of Luxembourg. He was actually count in the Moselgau and the Ardennes. He was also the advocate of the abbeys of Saint-Maximin de Trêves and Saint-Willibrod d'Echternach. He was a son of the Count Palatine Wigeric of Lotharingia and Cunigunda. He is the founder of the House of Luxembourg, a cadet branch of the House of Ardennes.

He had possessions from his father in Upper Lorraine. At the centre of his dominions he constructed the fortress of Luxembourg in 963. A town soon grew up around the castle. Though he used the title of count, the title "count of Luxembourg" was only applied to William some 150 years later.

Around 950, he married Hedwig of Nordgau (937–992), daughter of Eberhard IV of Nordgau. They had the following issue:

Ancient and medieval periods
The earliest human remains found in present-day Luxembourg date from about 5140 BC, but little is known about the people who first populated the area. Two Belgic tribes, the Treveri and Mediomatrici, inhabited the country from about 450 BC until the Roman conquest of 53 BC. The occupation of the country by the Franks in the 5th century AD marked the beginning of the Middle Ages in the locality. St. Willibrord played a very important role in the area's Christianization in the late 7th century. He founded the Benedictine abbey of Echternach, which became an important cultural centre for the region.
The area successively formed part of the Frankish kingdom of Austrasia, of the Holy Roman Empire under Charlemagne and Louis I the Pious, and then of the kingdom of Lotharingia. Luxembourg became an independent entity in 963, when Siegfried, Count de Ardennes, exchanged his lands for a small but strategically placed Roman castle lying along the Alzette River. This castle became the cradle of Luxembourg, whose name is itself derived from that of the castle, Lucilinburhuc ("Little Fortress"). Siegfried's successors enlarged their possessions by conquests, treaties, marriages, and inheritances. About 1060 Conrad, a descendant of Siegfried, became the first to take the title of count of Luxembourg. Conrad's great-granddaughter, Countess Ermesinde, was a notable ruler whose great-grandson, Henry IV, became Holy Roman emperor as Henry VII in 1308. This Luxembourg dynasty was continued on the imperial throne in the persons of Charles IV, Wenceslas, and Sigismund. In 1354 the emperor Charles IV made the county a duchy. In 1443 Elizabeth of Görlitz, duchess of Luxembourg and niece of the Holy Roman emperor Sigismund, was forced to cede the duchy to Philip III the Good, duke of Burgundy.

Siegfried or Sigefroy (c.922–28 Oct 998) is considered the first count of Luxembourg. He was actually count in the Moselgau and the Ardennes. He was also the advocate of the abbeys of Saint-Maximin de Trêves and Saint-Willibrod d'Echternach. He was a son of the Count Palatine Wigeric of Lotharingia and Cunigunda. He is the founder of the House of Luxembourg, a cadet branch of the House of Ardennes.

He had possessions from his father in Upper Lorraine. At the centre of his dominions he constructed the fortress of Luxembourg in 963. A town soon grew up around the castle. Though he used the title of count, the title "count of Luxembourg" was only applied to William some 150 years later.

Around 950, he married Hedwig of Nordgau (937–992), daughter of Eberhard IV of Nordgau. They had the following issue:

Er war wahrscheinlich der Sohn des Pfalzgrafen Wigerich von Lothringen (Wigeriche), Graf im Bidgau, sicher aber der Kunigunde, einer Enkelin des Königs Ludwig der Stammler Tochter der Ermentrud und vielleicht des Grafen Reginar I..

Siegfried tritt erstmals um 950 auf, falls man ihn nicht mit Kunigundes Sohn Sigebert gleichsetzt, der einzig 942 erwähnt wird, wobei man davon ausgeht, dass es sich in dem entsprechenden Dokument um einen Schreibfehler handelt[5]. Zu der Zeit (950) war Siegfried Laienabt des Klosters Echternach[6]. Er ist 982 als Graf im Moselgau nachgewiesen[7], darüber hinaus Vogt der Reichsabtei St. Maximin zu Trier und des Klosters Echternach [8] (nachdem er als Laienabt wohl abgetreten war). Am 17. April 963 erwarb er die Burg Lucilinburhuc (in der heutigen Stadt Luxemburg an der Alzette) im Tausch gegen Ländereien in Feulen bei Ettelbrück (Sauer) mit dem Kloster St. Maximin[9]. Um 964 beerbte er seinen Bruder Ardennengrafen Giselbert[10]. 964 erwarb er vom Trierer Erzbischof Heinrich Ländereien bei Saarburg mit dem Inselberg, auf dem sich die Saarburg befand[11]. 984 kämpfte er bei den Auseinandersetzungen um die Nachfolge des Kaisers Otto II. in Lothringen auf der Seite Ottos III., geriet in die Gefangenschaft der Gegenseite in Person des westfränkischen Königs Lothar. Nach dessen Tod 986 gelang Siegfried die Flucht.[12] Am 26. Oktober 997 wird Siegfried letztmalig als lebend erwähnt.[6]

In der Legende ist die Person Siegfrieds mit der Sagengestalt Melusine verknüpft.[13]

Siegfried heiratete um 950/963[14] Hadwig (* um 935/945[15]; † 13. Dezember nach 993[16]), deren Herkunft unbekannt ist[17]. Das Paar hatte elf (bezeugte) Kinder[18]:

Siegfrieds Herkunft [Bearbeiten]

Dass Kunigunde seine Mutter ist, ist gesichert[20]. Wer sein Vater ist, ist nicht belegt, erschließt sich lediglich aus den Ehen seiner Mutter, wobei die zweite, die sie nach dem Tod Wigerichs mit dem Grafen Richwin von Verdun schloss, als kinderlos angesehen wird. René Klein verfasste im Jahr 1998 eine Arbeit, mit der er nachzuweisen versuchte, dass Kunigunde nach dem Tod Richwins mit Giselbert, dem späteren Herzog von Lothringen, eine dritte Ehe einging, aus der Siegfried stammt (zu den Details siehe Kunigunde (Enkelin Ludwigs des Stammlers)).
