As a young man George Brusse went to The Netherlands East Indies, China, Hong Kong and Japan (from 1898 till 1904), to try his luck as a merchant. In 1905 George went to Arkansas in the USA were he met and married Reyniera Swart. Together they started a fruit growing operation ( Holland-American Fruit Products Co) in Decatur, Arkansas, which operated from 1908 till 1917 when they moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas to start a fruit canning factory. George and his family returned to The Netherlands in 1919, where George and his partner founded an import and export company named "Brusse & Sippel", in the town of Heemstede.
In 1920 George Brusse, Jan van Tijen, Anton Verkade and Bert Snijders started a Rotary club in Amsterdam. This was the first Rotary organization in the Netherlands. In 1923 Mr. John Taylor of the London Rotary Club installed the Amsterdam Rotary Club with Verkade as President, van Tyden as Vice President and Brusse as Secretary.
