Captain Frederick Henry SALMELA, USCG, retired Died November 5th, following three years of declining health. He was born on December 11, 1915 in Tacoma, WA where his family owned a commercial bakery. They also lived and owned bakeries in Seattle prior to moving to Bremerton in the 1920's. Fred worked at their Apex bakery and graduated from Bremerton High School. He then went to the University of Washington School of Business and graduated in 1939 with a degree in accounting. In 1941, he began his career at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, but had to leave when he received his commission as an Ensign in the Coast Guard. During World War II, he was assigned to convoy duty in both the European and Pacific war theaters. After the war, for several years, he owned a naval surplus busi ness in Honolulu, Hawaii. He returned to PSNS, only to be shipped out again to serve in the Korean War. Again return ing to Bremerton, he joined the Coast Guard reserve, achieving the rank of Captain. He resumed his work at PSNS, primarily as a computer systems analyst. During this time, Fred volun teered on the boards of the Kitsap Credit Union, Kitsap County Camp Fire Girls, and Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. He also earned a masters degree in Busi ness Administration from Pacific Lutheran University in 1972, and retired from PSNS in 1976. Besides traveling, Fred loved to moun tain climb. He climbed Mt. Rainier multiple times, along with successfully summiting the Matterhorn and Mount Rosa. He is preceded in death by his wife, Nellie, in 2003, and survived by his two daughters, Corinne (Green) and Taina (Clauson), sons-in-law, Dan Green and Louie Clauson, step-granddaughter, Carrina Clauson and granddaughters, Lydia and Celeste Green. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 10th at Summit Avenue Presbyterian Church, 403 Summit Avenue S., Bremerton, WA. Remembrances may be sent to The Alzheimer's Association. The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of the Norse Home third floor for the wonderful care they provided for the entire time of Fred's stay there. They would also like to thank Columbia Lutheran Home's Birch Unit.
