Nellie Nout Salmela, 81, of Bremerton died Sept. 18 at Marine Courte Memory Care Community in Bremerton of Alzheimer's disease.
She was born in Sheridan, Wyo., to Jan and Cornelia (Van Offeren) Nout. She grew up in the Netherlands, graduating from high school in Bussum, Netherlands, and completing studies in home economics at a college there.
As a U.S. citizen, she was interned in Germany during World War II. In 1945, she was exchanged for two German citizens and returned to the United States.
On Feb. 14, 1953, she married Frederick Salmela in San Francisco.
While living in San Francisco, Mrs. Salmela worked with two shipping companies. Later, she was employed as a parent education and toddler observation teacher at Olympic College.
She was a member of TRIADS, Chapter CG of PEO and Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Bremerton. She participated in the church's evening circle, choir and The Bookies Book Club.
Mrs. Salmela also enjoyed travel. She had traveled extensively in Europe and Asia and around the world on a cruise ship.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Corinne Green and her husband, Dan, of Seattle and Taina Clausen and her husband, Louie, of Bremerton; and two granddaughters, Lydia and Celeste.
A gathering for family and friends will be held at her home on Oct. 5. For information call Mr. Salmela.
