Notities over Caspar Heinrich Boberg

Note: , ._FA1.PLAC Erbkotter - first known holder of land - see notes for, history.
Some branches of our roots have been traced back in GER as, many as nine generations before the immigra tion of the Bobergs and, Franxmanns to the United States.Catholic Church records in Osnabrück, and Hagen of births, marriages and deaths were the principal source of, information and little else is known of the individuals. The probable, occupation of most was farming and the Boberg property is still farmed, by family members. The Boberg farm lies inOhrbeck and many of the, localities given in the records, some of which are shown on the attached, chart are in the vicinity of Osnabruck, West GER. [Northwest corner, ofGER], , The data in GER was obtained in 1982 by Alex, Himmermann who himself is a distant member of our family through one, of the Franksmannbranches. He resides in Georgsmarienhutte and has, provided the following description of the establishment of the area:,

Georgs marienhutte was founded in 1850 when a new steelwork, was, instituted. The king of the kingdom from Hannover of, that time was, Georg and his wife had the Mary. So the new, steelwork got the name , Georgs-Marien-Hutte. Some years, later the political community, 'Georgsmarienhutte' was, i nstituted. Ohrbeck is a group of farmhouses , lying in the, eastpart of the independent political community, Hasbergen.", An interesting practice was the retention of the familyname, with the property eventhough the inheritor might be a woman., The husband would assume his wife's surname along with ownership, of the, estate. There are several examples in the Boberg line as, well as in other branches of the genealogy. The practice was discarded in the early twentieth century or the present farm, wout i ll be in the Boberg name, instead of owned by Anton, Poggemann who inherited through his mother, Caroline Boberg.,

TRANSL ATION OF SOME GERMAN EXPRESSIONS USED,
Vollerbe - Oldest, farm division, (entirely inherited),
Halberbe - Smaller, next oldest, farmdivision, (portion inherited),
Erbkotter- Subdivision of larger, farm, (perhaps inhe ited),
Markkotter - Smaller subdivision, (perhaps, purchased),
Heuerling - Rentsland (tenantfarmer)

At first this region was primeval fores t. The inhabitants, were hunters and make, something(SIC) (may be sometimes?) tillage., Only when the Germans came, in this region about 500 years before Christ the tillage widened. At, first there was enough area for, tillage until 500 to 800years after Christ. Later on, the farms, which were founded in this time are called, Vollerbe. After that, time(800-1200) the farms which were founded could, not be so, great because the area exhausted or the technical conditions, for, that time are not good enough to cultivate all areas., The farms, which were founded now got the name Halberbe. In this time, the, eastparts of GER (Mecklenburg, Brandenburg,Prussia, Pomerania, Lilesia, etc.)were cultivated. The surplus population from our area went in these new areas., The surplus population growed, new farms must be founded. But the area was scarce. In this time (1250-1500) new farms could only be founded when already existing farms were divisioned. These, new farms got the name Erbkotter. Sometimes, today still it is
recognizable from which farm(Voll- or, Halberbe) such a farm is divisione from. It's clear that a, Erbkotter could never be so large a farm as aVoll- or Halberbe. Last the Markkotterfarms were founded, (1500-1700).People, who wanted to have an independent existence got a little area what in the mos ttimes nobody wanted to have. It really was a hard work to found this farm. After this time no area to build a new farm was available. The existing farmers built adjoining buildings. The people who are living in such houses are called Heuerling. They had to pay a rent (heuer) fo rliving in this house and had to work on the farms. They got incidently(SIC)[incidental?] earnings why(SIC),[when?] they, spun wool and flax. These textiles were exported, mostly to England and America ABT When Napoleon made a blockade, againstEngland this line of business went out. Many people growed poor and beginning in 1820 they, tried to emigrate. The Boberg farm is identified as an Erbkotter so that, means, it was established prior to 1500 A.D. Boberg records up until, 1750, were maintained in the St. Catharina Catholic Church which, was destroyed , during WWII. After that time they were kept in the, St.John's Catholic Church in Osnabrück and now only those after 1750 are available to us.The other families are mostly documented in S t.John' s from much earlier times.
