In his brother Henry's will of 1752, James was bequeathed "all sums of money which shall appear to be cancelled". James was also to inherit, from his brother Henry, an interest in Clandon Farm at Winterbourne St Martin - half of the total, his sisters Mary and Jane's son Christopher, having the other half. Jame's sisters and nephew Christopher went to live in the parish of Winterborne St. Martin soon after they received their half of this bequest. James continued to live in Broadwey.
After his wife's death, we know little more about James. He was a witness to two marriages at Broadwey; one by licence on 26 May 1765 and the other on the 10th September 1771, the signature is the same in each. His burial entry reads:"James Shering, at Winterborne Monkton on 29 July 1779." His reason for being there could well be because he had gone there to help his niece, Joan Wyer nee Kellaway.
