obit; Mercedes Randall, a prominent pacifist and for many years a memberof the Womens International League for Peace and Freedom, died yesterday in her home at 16 Claremont Avenue in Manhatten. She was 81 years old.She had served in various executive positions within the league during her career and had written on issues of feminist concern in the early years of that movement. She was the author of The Improper Bostonian and Beyond Nationalism. The first work concerned the life of Emily Greene Balch, a pacifist colleague, and the second book concerned Mrs. Randalls political thought.A pamphlet Mrs. Randall wrote in 1943, entitled Voice of a Brothers Blood, attacked Nazi persecution of Jews. It was distributed by the American Jewish Committee.Mrs. Randall was born in Guatemala, the daughter of Albert Moritz, an American merchant. She attended school there, and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Barnard College. She received a masters degree in history from Columbia University in 1917.For nearly four years after her graduation, she taught English in local high schools and subsequently was married to John Herman Randall Jr., a philosopher and a professor at Columbia.Mrs. Randall is survived by her husband and their two sons, John H. 3d and Francis; two brothers, Arthur Moritz and Sidney Moritz, and two grandchildren.
My grandfathers business was suffering because of Americas adoption of the gold standard and Guatemalas clumsy efforts to adjust to it. And my mother was approaching school age, and her parents thought she needed a real school, not a Guatemalan one. So they moved back to the USA in 1902. They had to travel by mule from Guatemala City down the mountains to the then railhead at Zacapa, and then by a primitive train to Puerto Barrios, and by a sleek ship to New Orleans. On shipboard my mother was terrified, because her Maya nurse had told her that the fifty two year cycle of the world would come to an end while she was on the ship, and world would be destroyed.
