Two Meet Death On Desert Road
Dead are Clayton G. Girard, 30, San Fernando; and Mrs. Marjorie Huber, 44, San Francisco. Girard and Mrs. Huber were killed at 9 p.m. Saturday on Highway 91, about 3 1;2 miles east of Windmill station, northeast of Baker, less than 40 minutes after the driver of the car in which Girard was a passenger had been cited by a California, USA Highway patrolman for speeding. Officer A. M. Smith said he had stopped Harold Ford, 31, of San Fernando, driver of the car at about 8:20 p.m. and had cited him for speeding and for driving without a tail light. Ford, critically injured in the accident, told Smith that he, Girard and a third passenger were in a hurry to get to Utah to see their wives, Smith added.
Mrs. Huber was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, Melvin T. Huber, 42, going west on 91, according to Deputy coroner E. P. Doyle. Ford was driving east, Doyle said, and attempting to pass other cars on the highway. The cars slammed into each other broadside when Ford swerved off the highway to the left and Huber attempted to avoid him, Doyle said. Both Girard and Mrs. Huber were on the right sides of their respective cars and were crused when the cars came together. Ford and Tremain were taken to the county hospital, where Ford was suffering from head injuries and Tremain was treated for a broken leg. Huber suffered superficial bruises. The bodies were taken to O'Donnell's mortuary in Barstow, where an inquest is pending.
