Now, let me tell you about Grandma Pauline Dennery's experience in theearthquake. Many years before, she had been kind to a Jewish immigrant family from Poland. The man was a peddler and he went through the streets of San Francisco in a horse-drawn wagon, buying rags, bottles, and what-have-you from the residents. This was a common occupation of poor people in the early days. They would come by singing, rags, bottles, papers and you would sell or give them things you didn't need.
Grandma Dennery was very nice to this man. She discovered that he had quite a few children and she used to give him clothes for the children and his wife, and he was very grateful to her. As the years went on, he became prosperous, and he set up a moving and delivery service, and had a stable with horses and wagons. He always came to see Grandma and brought her little gifts, and said, Mrs. Dennery, if ever I can repay you for what you have done for me, you only have to ask.
So here is Grandma, living at the Atherton Hotel and the fire is coming closer and closer. In those days there were very few automobiles and everyone who could was getting out of town behind horse driven vehicles. Grandma got in touch with her son Henry and told him, Go down to Mrr So-and-so's delivery service and you tell him that you are Pauline Dennery's son and now she is asking you to do kindnesses for her, for you always said you would repay my kindnesses when you were poor and young. I want a horse and wagon to take me and my daughter down through San Jose and over to Oakland where my other daughter is living. And one late afternoon when we were sitting out on the lawn because it was so awfully hot, along came a wagon, and who was sitting on the front seat but Grandma, holding on to all her valuables, and in the back of the wagon was Aunt Rosine with a trunk and some suitcases.
I imagine that journey took Grandma an entire day, because they left early in the morning and got to Oakland late in the afternoon.
